N-400 questions

Okay, here's a dumb question. Several of the questions on the N-400 form are geared for 5 yr applicants, such as length of time outside the U.S. in the previous 60 months. For 3 yr applicants such as my wife, do we use 36 months as the basis for our answer, since obviously she was outside the country prior to that?

Yes - use it going back to the date of her permanent residency. If you wanted, you could cross out the '5' and write in '3' to make it clear.

Just add a row after three years and say you were not in the US at this time.
