Hello everyone,

Well it looks like i will be traveling to Dubai for 30days in the next month. I have only been out of USA for 30 days in the last 3 years. Will it be okay to travel after filing N-400. I guess I wont be getting the interview letter too soon as i will be getting back by the end of Aug...any thoughts??? I am gonna pause the delivery of the mail at USPS so that i dont lose the interview letter.

any suggestions? whether i not its a good decision to travel in the middle of the process?

On the second note..do they actually tell you on your online status update that an interview letter has been sent to you or something like that?

BTW I am from Detroit, MI...so anyone from detroit can tell me how the time lines are running to get the IL?

Thanks a lot!

You can travel after the N-400 is submitted, you however, might be schedualed for your Finger Printing, meaning you would have to return to the US on the date specified (usually a month or 2 after they recieve your N-400), so be prepared to have someone check your mail and then board the next flight out to make that appointment.

The interview is usually schedualed 2 months or longer after they recieve the N-400, but some could be schedualed earlier depending on the District. So again, you would have to book then next flight back to the US on very short notice.

This is why people are advised to hold off on the N-400 if they know they have a trip planned like that, or to hold off on the trip till after they get the oath...

you never know when your interview or oath will be. You can always reschedule, but thats a gamble! people's timelines are just a guessing game, your timeline could be significantly different.

Well, I'm not from Detroit but our timelines are pretty close - I filed on June 5 and my bios are July 1st. Based on that I'd think you'll receive the

interview letter sometime in August when you're gone; so it might be good if someone watches your mail and gets ahold of you in case your interview collides with your vacation and you have to come home prematurely.

I'll travel abroad, too in August, but my trip will only last from the 5th to the 16th.

You'll also have to tell about your intl. trip at the interview.

Enjoy your vacation and good luck for the rest of your journey! :star:

Thanks Imzadi..yea i agree our timelines have pretty similar pattern. Unfortunately, no one can check may mail on my behalf. I will have to ask USPS to hold may mail for a month.

I am assuming that USCIS online status update tells you if an interview is scheduled. Is that correct????

My 3 year mark completes on Sep 5th so I hope I wont be getting the interview before that.

my online status does not even work at all, and they told me they could not even promise it will update either even if it did. I would not risk it unless you plan to just ask to be rescheduled. They can interview you before you 5 year mark. They just delay your oath. You could also try to call and say you wanted to find out about your status because you are not sure if it was mailed yet and see if they will tell you before you leave.

@Jess1 - in our June 2009 filers thread, I know you mentioned your biometrics letter read that you could go on the appt date set or any Wed up to 10/11/09. They won't schedule an interview (I think - maybe someone can comment), if you haven't done your fingerprints. So an option would be to leave the biometrics until the closest day from your departure, or even leave it until you come back... that way you can be sure you will be here when your IL comes. But that will slow your whole process down I realize...

AOS: ND - June 5 2006 | RFE - June 15 2006 | FP Notice - June 30 (Rescheduled to Sept 16) | AP ND - August 14 2006| Walk-in FP - Sept 5 (FP cleared next day!) | Interview - Sept 8 2006 (Approved!) | Welcome Letter - Sept 13 | EAD received - Sept 19 (kinda moot since I'm waiting for GC) | GC received - Sept 23 2006 - Woohoo!!

I-751: 06/10/08 Mailed package to VSC direct (per memo instructions) not TSC. The wait begins... | 06/11/08 Package received at VSC (12.12pm) | 06/19/08 Check cashed | 06/20/08 Received NOA1 in the mail - ND is 06/17/08 | 07/10/08 Received Biometrics Appt Letter - ND is 7/7/08 | 07/22/08 Biometrics (had to do ink & paper also...) | 07/22/08 Touched | 07/23/08 Touched | 02/11/09 Transferred to CSC (got email)... | 02/12/09 Touched | 02/20/09 Touched (but no email) | 03/24/09 Approval letter arrives in the mail! Approval date is 3/18/09 from VSC | 04/03/09 Received card, postmarked 3/31 from CSC

N-400: 06/11/09 Mailed to Lewisville Lockbox | 06/12/09 Package received at Lockbox and signed for at 1.31pm | 06/18/09 Check Cashed | 06/19/09 NOA, PD 06/12/09 | 07/06/09 Biometrics letter received, ND is 07/02/09 | 07/24/09 Biometrics appointment | 08/06/09 IL received, ND 08/03/09 | Interview 09/14/09 at 9.30am (approved!) | Oath 10/21/09 | USC

Nope, not correct. The online status for citizenship is very rarely, if ever, updated after the N-400 is received and the case status states "Case received and pending".

This is true. I was never even entered into the system to begin with. I went as far as calling up the USCIS about it and they said this is common not to even be put into the online system. I was also told even if it was, don't be too sure the information is accurate or even updated...

My husband got his letter scheduling the interview 6 weeks in advance, if that is a common trend, and maybe some other people can comment on their timing to see if it is, you would know before you left if there was going to be a problem and try to reschedule it. I can't imagine that if you left for 30 days you would miss getting the letter AND having the interview, but who knows.
