at this point I do not have a strong desire to become a US citizen but if and when I do become a citizen it will only be because of convenience.. as many of stated already when you have a few more rights as a citizen.. like you can come and go freely from the US without having to worry about how long you are out of the country.. also I wouldn't have to worry about renewing my green card every 10 years...

Can't think of a better day than July 4th . . . independence day. It's like winning the lottery!

 Makes sense to become a citizen on the day the US gained independence from England!

given that US citizenship is a choice, not mandatory, I would have to disagree w/ what I bolded. You can live in this country as a permanent resident, no need to go the extra mile and apply for citizenship.

True. And the Oath of Allegiance is a big problem for some people, like my husband. He will most likely never become a US citizen because he'll have to renounce his allegiance to Germany, which he isn't inclined to do. If we have to renew every 10 years, then so be it. I understand. I don't believe I would want to renounce my allegiance to America should I be asked in order to become a German citizen. Permanent residency is fine.

Wife had problems with bearing guns for this country, she is deadly afraid of them, but my army captain neighbor assured her, if it comes to that, we would really be in bad shape.

Actually that part was the only thing that bothered, I know i can fire a gun, I have been to ranges w/ my husband. But I don't think I would go out and just willingly go shoot one if things are not that bad, but if things got that bad and the government needs us to bare arms, it must be real bad and I would definitely do it... otherwise guns are not my thing
