New speaker:

John Bercow is elected Commons Speaker

MAVERICK Conservative John Bercow has been elected as the new Commons Speaker. </h2> He beat fellow Tory Sir George Young in the third ballot of the night, by 322 votes to 271.

Bercow, widely regarded to be more popular on the Labour benches than his own, has promised a period of change and reform.

In a traditional ritual, the new Speaker was then "dragged" to the chair and said: "I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the confidence that you have placed in me."

I don't know this guy at all, but from the reading I have done so far, it seems as though of the two front runners, this guy is the less 'conventional' of the two and at least they didn't elect Widdecombe. Oh the horror averted there!
