This is a great story. Congrats to Stephen Fry!

Stephen Fry is a shadow of his former self. He has lost almost six stone since December and can at last bear to look at himself in the mirror again.

He has gone from 'appallingly corpulent' - which is how he describes his 21 stone pre-diet appearance - to become leaner, fitter and almost hyper-energetic.

His new regime has also helped in his long battle against manic depression, and he says life now has many more ups than downs for him.

He has walked more than five miles from his home in London's West Hampstead to meet me, and will walk all the way back.

'And when I get indoors, I'll be wishing I still had another five miles to go,' he says. 'It's actually rather exciting to have reinvented myself.'

Looking at him today - he weighs 15st 7lb - and comparing it with his appearance in the new series of Kingdom, in which he plays a solicitor, he looks like a man who has had a fat suit removed.

Kingdom, back on ITV1 on Sunday nights, was filmed last year - well before the weight loss.

I knew something had to be done. I'm 6ft 5in tall, but 21st is too heavy. For the first month, I did without bread, potatoes and sugar, and the weight rolled off.

'Since then, I've stopped eating other types of food, such as red meat. I've continued to lose weight and feel much better for it.

'And I never thought I would say this, but I genuinely enjoy going to the gym. I spent years mocking them, but now I'm one of the converts. :thumbs:

'What has helped enormously has been the audio books I listen to while I'm walking. I've written myself a list of great novels and am slowly working my way through them...
