Course, your spouse has or had a computer, when it comes to buying something, like a impact wrench, table saw, or any kind of a tool, always a bit of discussion. Do you really need it? Well I guess if you have to buy it, etc.

But a completely different story with computers, ran across these new netbooks, small and cheap. Just mentioned to my wife, would be nice for our trips, can get on the net and easy to carry it. No discussion, she said, BUY IT!

My husband saw those netbooks shortly after they came out, and computer geek that he is, he had to have one. He loves it, although the newer versions have some of the kinks worked out of them. They really are useful for travel.

Aren't those just small, barebones computers? The ones I saw had virtually no graphics capacity on them either. Then again, most of them are under $200 so it's not like you're paying much for it.

The data plans are a rip off.

$60 for 5 gigs (per month) is laughable.

They are a neat idea. Much better than using the net on a little phone.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

There is a new MSI version out that has a good 20 hours use. MSI U115 if I remember correctly.

I'd wait till August when the first netbooks come out with Nvidia Ion chips (Lenovo S12 is the first one I think). Same small size - but you get better performance approaching a regular laptop.

Netbooks at the moment are only really good for basic word processing and browsing the net. The eee 1000HE I bought back in Feb/March is very useful - but if I'd probably go for the new (much thinner) eee 1005 version that's coming out.

I freagin hate nvidia. After the pain those bastards put me through with their graphics cards.

Intel has a new chip up their sleeve too. Which will have everything integrated in it.

Though in all fairness, I have seen the Ion chip in action and it does support streaming 720p.

Was looking at this one:

acer-aspire-one.jpg

And played with one at our Officemax store, price was 300 bucks, saw many other brands with much higher price tags, same 1 GB ram, 160 GB HD, LED screen size, Intel Atom processor, but the more expensive ones may only come with a 60GB drive. Most have Windows XP Home Premium loaded on them, that was refreshing, same as buying any other full size notebook and desktop. While a slower processor is used, was a lot faster than those high speed jobs running Vista. I was impressed, also has a LAN jack with full audio capability, screen was clear and sharp.

Ten by six by one inch thick, a lot smaller than dragging my wife's 17 inch 101 keyboard around, would require a USB optical drive extra if you don't have one. Acer comes in four colors to complicate your decision, LOL, that is my wife's main criteria for buying a computer, I get more technical than that. Not sure about the Acer, have to check on that, but others claim a 9.5 hour battery life. My big fingers had no problems with the keyboard, but never could get use to those notebook mouse pads, would prefer an external, but it works.

Was thinking about MS Streets and Trips on it for her GPS, if I can think of a good way to mount it in the vehicle, can also double for her MP3 player, can't believe all the cords we have in our car.

Acer Aspire models are OK - but pretty average in netbook terms. That 10" model has a ####### trackpad and weird rocker mouse button that's a pain to use. Its also quite difficult to upgrade the RAM in it - the eee 1000HE that I have its just a cause of removing the battery, unscrewing a small panel and popping it in. You can also upgrade the HDD that way too.

You'd be better off going for the ASUS eee 1008 (the 1005 model with the removable battery is out fairly soon).

Some pretty good features for about a hundred bucks more, will have to drive to the next larger town to see one, buying a computer is a personal thing.

In the looking stage right now, use to buy Asus mainboards, was always happy with their support and quality.
