Hi everyone!

My question is: Can I apply for my teaching licence while waiting for AOS and EAD?

There would also be a background check and fingerprinting.

Would I get in truoble with USCIS?

I would really like to start the process already since it takes some time?

Thanks for your replies. I´m curious what your thoughts are on this.

I think you'd be perfectly ok with getting your teaching license - no rule (that I'm aware of) preventing you/us from obtaining a professional license/certification without having an EAD/PR-Green card.

Thank you! That sounds really good!

My wife was a certified teacher in Ukraine. It will depend on state's rules of course. What she had to do, first, was have her education and credentials evaluated here. You can certainly start on that. Send her educational credentials and teaching certificate to ECE (google ECE). They will need copies of the originals and a certified translation. For $125 they give you two certified "course by course" evaluations and a determination of US equivilency. Without paying for "expedited" service it will take about a month to receive the reports. The "basic" evaluation is $80, but for teaching I think she will need the "course by course" evaluation.

My wife's Ukraine credentials were accepted as valid and equivilent to US requirements. In order to obtain a teaching certificate for public schools K-12 in Vermont, she needs an additional 3 credits of English and 1 credit of US history. She is certified to teach in private schools and/or universities with only her foreign credentials verified...again this will vary by each state.

She is taking these course now and in addition had to make a satisfactory score on the TOEFL exam for the university she attends. Not all unversities require the TOEFL exam. It is an assessment of the foreign student's English ability and can be quite difficult for non-native speakers. If your fiancee has a good grasp of English, she should do fine. Google "TOEFL" and you will find local test dates. She can also take the TOEFL in Germany. It is given worldwide. There will be no problems with the USCIS or State Department in doing this.

Thanks very much. I always like to hear what it was like for other people. I already have my credentials evaluated and I am in touch with the dpartment of education in Minnesota. We´ll see what they have to say. I am very curious and excited. Hopefully I can teach at some point.

Thanks again.

And good luck to your wife. I think it sounds good for her. I would be glad if I only had to take 4 more credits.

Svetlana was an English teacher in both the Ukraine and Russia.

We had her credentials evaluated and applied one month ago for her Florida teaching certificate.

She also has applied to several private and charter schools, as well as a handful of retail stores, and to a couple of translation jobs.

But so far . . . nothing. I fear we may have to move to Tennessee (my home state and where most of my family lives) if I get laid off.

After miles and miles of government red tape, the nightmare of getting her driver's license, waiting three months for the authorization to work, and then having no success finding anything, she pretty much feels America is a third-world nation.

I can't say I blame her much. :crying:

I´m sorry to hear that. Hopefully it is just the transition that makes everyhing difficult. Since when is she here?

I can imagine that it takes time to get a job. It probably takes some time to figure out what kind of expections and requirements American employers have and adjust to that.

I am planning on doing some volunteering while I´m waiting for the EAD. That way I will at least have some American references once I apply for jobs. And I won´t be bored

Good luck for you. I hope you won´t get laid off :star:

Yes, you can apply teaching certification while waiting for your green card. I'm a teacher as well. All you have to do is have you're credentials be evaluated by WES or other credited agencies. Then, make a research or call the Department of Education in your state and ask the requirements for your certification. I applied my certification in SBEC in Texas. I think theres no problem with that. This is the best time to start processing your certification and gathering the required documents while waiting for your green card and work permit. Usually, it takes long time for the credentialling and preparing for the certification. I just got my welcome letter yesterday stating that my green card and work permit were approved. At the same time, my request for credentialling in SBEC in Texas is almost done.
