The list says our co-sponsor needs to have a passport, but ours doesn't... Will a birth certificate suffice or is there anything else we can do if not? Thanks for the help.

The Sam's.

If your co-sponsor can prove US citizenship (birth certificate) it's just fine. No requirement here (in the US) for everyone to have passport.

If your co-sponsor can prove US citizenship

Confused  Why have to be U.S. citizen or have to have passport???

I though co-sponsor can be Green Card holder.

By the way Green Card holder doesn't have U.S. passport and certificate of birth in U.S.

Oh no I'm sorry, we just have a checklist of all the things you need for a co-sponsor to be eligible and a passport is on there, thanks for clarifying though! He has a birth certificate so we shouldn't have a problem. Thanks for the replies!

Made me worry... My interview soon and I don't have any copies of birth certificate or passport from my co-sponsor. Have only I134, W2, 1040 and payslips :crying: The copy of passport really important?

Co-sponsor must be US citizen. The co-sponsor is putting themselves up to reimburse the government if the beneficiary becomes a public charge and the US government would have a hard time enforcing this against a non-citizen, especially if they leave the country.

Consulates can add stipulations regarding co-sponsors or choose not to allow them at all. If the instructions clearly say he needs a passport, I would ask him to get one.

Go to the instructions for the I134 (and while you are at it - look at the I864).

Show me where it says the sponsor has to be a US citizen.

Update and correction. LPR can also co-sponsor. My apologies for any confusion. The passport issue would be consulate specific
