Obama PR stunt frightens and enrages New York City

Mayor Bloomberg went ballistic Monday after the U.S. military - without any warning to the public - buzzed New York City with one of the presidential planes trailed by an F-16 fighter jet.

Flying in as low as 1000 feet to 150 feet above New York City and taking photographs along the way, the planes circled the Statue of Liberty and flew over Manhattan, Staten Island, and New Jersey - then vanished.

Before they were gone, hundreds of frightened people had jammed the emergency lines, thousands of terrified people evacuated from buildings in the city and across the river in Jersey, and many New Yorkers had flashbacks to the 9/11 attacks.

"I didn't know what was going on," said Eunice Davis, 41, of Brooklyn, who was evacuated from the New York Mercantile Exchange. "Some planes were circling the building. I was afraid. I was here when the World Trade Center went down."

"We thought we were under attack again," added a shaken Wall Street worker, who declined to give his name.

The NYPD confirmed that it had been told of the Pentagon's "aerial photo mission" last Thursday but ordered to stay quiet about it.

The planes flew back to Andrews Air Foce Base in Maryland after scaring New York.

Traders bolted from the floor of the New York Mercantile Exchange after seeing the jets. The exchange, which sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan and is blocks from the site of the terrorist-destroyed World Trade Center, didn't order an evacuation.

People trading oil, natural gas and other commodities on the Nymex floor apparently took no chances. A Nymex security official was "literally standing, holding his hands up in a calming gesture. Guys were running right past him," said Pete Donovan, a vice president at Vantage Trading in the crude-futures ring.

But several buildings in the area were ordered evacuated, although workers quickly returned after it became clear that the flyover was a planned event.

i thought nothing scared new yorkers. anyone seen mawilson lately?

My dad used to work in the city, he saw the attacks on 9/11. Not much scared him but he could never watch footage of those attacks on TV, ever. Too traumatic and it's like that for a lot of other people I know who actually saw it happen in front of them. A lot of these guys who work there today probably worked in Manhattan back in 01 too. I don't blame them for reacting that way.

Why on earth were they ordered not to tell anyone about it? Once again lack of communication. Apparently not much has changed since 9/11. Unfrikkin believable.
