So far everyone has been concentrating on the problems leaving Canada at the U. S. border. When my fiancee is approved, I'll be entering Canada with a one-way ticket and driving my fiancee's car back to Texas. I expect this will require trigger all kinds of flags with the Canadian border officials. I'm assuming that I will be required to show at least some of the K-1 paperwork to make them happy. Anyone else have prior experience???

Yep. My husband flew up on a one-way ticket because he was driving down with me. He got pulled into secondary at Pearson and I was left standing at the arrivals gate wondering what happened to him. Have your fiancee provide you with a copy of the visa and a copy of the interview letter so you can prove you're leaving.

My husband flew 1 way through Pearson because we were driving back to Virginia in a Uhaul together. His experience was straight forward. He stated when he was returning and how and they didn't blink an eye.

think it all depends on the mood of the person asking. For safety's sake - why not have his employer write a note just as the Cdn SO's do when they go to visit the USA?

Good luck.

Another thought - I don't know what the Cdn border guards would do with proof of a US Visa document that is in your fiancé(e)'s name...but maybe all that proof would be helpful

My fiance will be doing the same thing in June. I think having concrete prof you have a K-1 visa approval and that you are intending on living together in the US would be satisfactory... Let us know how it goes!

So it just goes to show you that if you have proof they won't ask you for it and if you don't, they will.

Ok so I get to tell our border story again!

When I was moving to the States, Joe flew up to Detroit, rented a van at the Airport and drove across at Windsor. When he got to the border the guard asked him where he was going and why. He responded he was going to Chatham to pick up his fiancee and move her back down to the States to get married. Without missing a beat, the border guard said 'Drive on, Brother, Drive on! Far be it from me to stand in the way of another man's misery!"

So, tell them you are coming into Canada to help your fiancee with her move to the US and will be driving her car back to Texas. Having a copy of the K-1 visa won't hurt, but as you won't be carrying lots of luggage and you'll have all of your US identification, you should be fine. Good luck and safe travels - that's a long drive!

When I went to MTL just over a week ago, I drove over on a rainy Tuesday night. Of course, the Canadian guards were curious what I was doing, where I was going, etc. I had the "binder o' fun" in the front seat with me just to show the MTL interview letter, along with all of the data for the actual interview... if I was asked.

Here's about how the convo went...

BG: Citizenship?

Me: US.

BG: Do you have your ID?

Me: Yes (as I hand him my passport).

BG: Where are you going?

Me: London, ON

BG: What's in London?

Me: My fiance'.

BG: Why are you driving through on a rainy Tuesday night?

Me (as I reach for the binder): He and I are going to Montreal early tomorrow morning for his interview at the US Consulate for his US K1 Visa.

BG: Make sure you've got all your paperwork in order. Have fun.

Me (as I put binder back on the seat): Thank you! (as the BG hands me back my passport)

So, just as Krikit says... if you've got proof, you won't need it!! So, make sure everyone on each side of the border has ample proof of everything!

My husband flew in to Edmonton with a one-way ticket and when they asked purpose of trip he mistakenly answered "To get my wife". Well that opened a whole can of worms that he was unprepared for.

I guess they didn't like that answer, since he only had a one-way ticket at that point.

He tried saying, we're moving to Hawaii, and when asked to prove it, all he had was an Alaska DL, a plane that arrived from Kansas City, and a phone number registered to Seattle. Then when searching though his bag to find his travel orders, she asked if he'd been drinking or if there was booze in his bag.

He finally found his travel orders and gave them to the border officer and said "Look lady, here they are." Dumbass.

I stood alone at arrivals for half-an-hour wondering if he'd missed his plane. He came out angry and red faced, no longer happy to be in Canada.

Timbit my love?

PS: Chris still maintains that calling a Lady - Lady is not derogatory. :bonk:
