I have a bit of a conflict at work and I am not sure how deal with it.

My boss decided to have an off-site take place for the team and their partners. This will start at 5pm with a wine tasting and a dinner at a vineyard, then we spend the night there and the next morning, the team members will have a 5 hour long brain storming while the partners go and have a group activity. At lunch time, we all get together again, go hiking for a few hours and then have a late lunch together.

This will take place on a Friday night and all Saturday. This takes place when Pedro is here for the three weeks in June. I am asked to bring him along, which if it were just the dinner, would be fine. But I hate having to spent half a day on my weekend away from him, working with the team on targets. Plus, since there are only guys in my team, Pedro would be stuck with a bunch of non-english speaking ladies in their 40s, doing wellness massages, drinking champagne at the pool.

So, this is all far from being ideal.

I am not sure how to get out of it. I know that my boss will be not very appreciative of me not coming along. He does not care that Pedro and I only see each other for a few weeks a year. I somehow need to wrap it nicely, so he is ok with me not coming along.

Ideas?

that doesn't sound too terrible. its only 5 hours. he can bring his ipod right? what does Pedro think about it?....its not worth making waves at work.

Yeah, I am torn.

I know it's not such a big deal, but then on the other hand, we only see each other abot six/ eight weeks a year.

We only have two weekends to spend together while he is here, so it would be nice to have them to ourselves and not be bothered with a work thing.

na.. still 5 hours is 5 hours dude.. I'd definitely prefer being with Julia, rather than spend 5 hours doing aquarobics and stuff.. we don't get much time together.. so, any time, specially on the weekends.. is very very special for us

and, it'd be more than 5 hours.. doing some random stuff, rather than being together.. squirrel-bear time is sacred yo

I think I would try talking to the boss first as well. The only downside to that is if he insists you attend you're pretty much screwed. Because after discussing the possibility of not attending, if you just don't show up, he'll know why. I see where you are coming from but I think it would just be easier to go and get it over with. Since they probably already know Pedro is going to be in town they may hold that against you if you don't go. They might just assume that's why you didn't go and have issues with that. It's a hard call.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I was just hoping that someone would have a brilliant idea of how to get out of it.

I hate work social get togethers. I used to be a social butterfly at work, but with that bank I am currently working with, people are a bit different from the regular investment bankers. They are not a very international bunch.

Yeah, I know. Damn, it bugs me. Especially because my boss is such a #######.

I think you have answered your own question. Don't piss him off if he is a #######. He couls make your life impossible. Ask and tell hi the truth, if he says no then you and pedro will have to suck it up and make the best of it.
