Justice Clarence Thomas doesn't like the Bill of Rights

Justice Clarence Thomas ... turned up in a Washington ballroom the other night to respond to questions from the winners of a high school essay contest.

The event, on March 31, was devoted to the Bill of Rights, but Justice Thomas did not embrace the document, and he proposed a couple of alternatives.

‘Today there is much focus on our rights,” Justice Thomas said. “Indeed, I think there is a proliferation of rights.”

“I am often surprised by the virtual nobility that seems to be accorded those with grievances,” he said. “Shouldn’t there at least be equal time for our Bill of Obligations and our Bill of Responsibilities?”

He gave examples: “It seems that many have come to think that each of us is owed prosperity and a certain standard of living. They’re owed air conditioning, cars, telephones, televisions.”

Those are luxuries, Justice Thomas said.

“I have to admit,” he said, “that I’m one of those people that still thinks the dishwasher is a miracle. What a device! And I have to admit that because I think that way, I like to load it. I like to look in and see how that dishes were magically cleaned.”

There is only one person on the bench the left says that about... he happens to be the only black.

Actually "Intelligence" is not a requirement to be on the Supreme Court. IIRC one need not even have a law degree.... why do you suppose that is?

Perhaps we should remove the requirement for being judged by a "Jury of your peers" to being judged by a "jury of the intelligent class"?

You have been listening to too many "sound bites" on TV, and not reading enough of Justice Thomas' opinions. He is a strict constructionalist with a wry sense of humour. Thomas has never spoken in oral arguments to date, so he is called "The Silent Justice". The media doesn't like Thomas, and he has no love for them, rarely giving interviews, and never acting out in the expected "black advocacy" role so many assumed he would take. Thomas is no Al Sharpton, and is not well liked by extremists in the black political community.
