Two killed on campus of Detroit-area college

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Two students were killed Friday in an apparent murder-suicide that prompted a lockdown at a community college west of Detroit, police said.

The bodies of 28-year-old man and 20 year-old woman were discovered in a room at a Henry Ford Community College building after police responded to an emergency call of a gunshot on campus, said Dearborn Deputy Police Chief Gregg Brighton.

As officers entered the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center, they heard another gunshot, Brighton said.

The man used a shotgun to kill the woman and then turned the gun on himself, he said.

Brighton declined to release their names but said they took at least one class together, which had met earlier in the day.

The 17,000-student commuter school sent alerts through an e-mail and cellphone system and locked down the campus, said Marjorie Swan, Henry Ford's vice president/controller.

"Nothing like this has ever occurred on campus," Swan said.

She said the campus wasn't as busy as usual, based on how full the parking lots appeared. The shooting occurred on Good Friday.

Swan said officials would decide later Friday if classes would be held Saturday morning.

"Our hearts go out to the family and the friends of the young woman who lost her life today," Swan said.

Christian Plonka, a 12-year-old who attends a theater program in the building, said he heard "one gunshot, and I saw someone getting pulled back into the room they were in."

Plonka and other students in the program ran into a parking lot at the adjacent University of Michigan-Dearborn campus, where they waited until police allowed them to leave.

Earlier Friday, a 19-year-old gunman wounded three people at a vocational training college in Athens, before killing himself, authorities said.

The shootings came a week after a man walked into the American Civic Association center in Binghamton, New York, and killed 14 people before turning the gun on himself.

Is it just me or does there seem to be a lot more violent shootings going on lately? Maybe I'm just taking more notice of them for some reason, but there seems to be sooo many!

I just did a 5 hour taping for a less than 3 minute television news package on campus security and their implementation for notification program. That and I touched on the Virginia Tech Memorial coming up next week. It was disheartening to say the least to cover such material.

I happened by chance to run across a man who did an interview for me. He was wearing a burnt orange UT baseball cap and I commented on it. He told me he went to UT and graduated in 1963. I asked about the shootings since it was related and he told me it happened in 1966 and Charles Whitman shoot people from the University Tower which was a library. It had an observatory up there and it was closed for many years until the 1990's when it reopened again. I remember because it was just before I left Austin and I had already learned the history of the campus shooting there. So to get the interview this man was incredible. He told me one of his friends was killed and he told me how he learned he was killed and how the man was shot in the back of the head. I got all this on tape. The irony of this was that the man I ran into with the campus shooting interview from Texas happened to be sitting next to the bench I was going to get some B roll on. The bench was placed in a park with a plaque on it in honor of officer Lee Newbill who was shot in the line of duty by a mentally ill student trying to do a copy cat active shooter situation like Virginia Tech. Only his plan was to shot from the church across the street into the court house steps in order to draw people out. He kill the caretaker of the church a student at U of I an officer and then himself.

Mentally ill and access to legal or illegal guns and has a real bad attitude?

This subject I just really don't like thinking about it or dealing with it but I must trudge on through the project and turn it in.

I dont know what's going on with the world and people today. These people are nuts! And the thing is, they are so COWARD to face the world after killing innocent people so they kill themselves so to escape everything. Its so cowardly. One thing's for sure, they cant escape God's judgment.

Its a sad reality that theres no place safe these days anymore. U think your kids are safe in school, yet they are not.

There are many more factors involved then guns. Active shooter situations have occured in other countries too such as Germany, and the UK, and even some Asian and African countries. Gun violence is everywhere regardless of if legal access or illegal access to weapons. Some reports recently say that the recent accumulation of random shootings have increased during this time of economical crisis. However, we've been in a crisis before and we will come out of it.

I think he will fit the description. I live in the area and the local newspaper said the girl (r.i.p.) was 1 of his only 2 friends on FaceBook. I'm in my last month at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and my school is less than 500 feet from HFCC.
