The ethical question is, knowing that the population is not sustainable, how do we solve the problem of overpopulation?

My words? You mean I can't go cut and paste something from the interwebz FP?

you could volunteer to be part of the solution, if it bothers you so.

I am sure I could. Perhaps I do. Ohhhhhhh, you mean the solution is genocide and I should in fact impale myself on the bloodied sword?

Shooter, you are really are such a card. Very entertaining.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I think it will not be anything so dramatic. Interestingly most civilizations stretch themselves to breaking point, then break. I expect ours will not be much different. As society disintegrates, the means for sustenance reduces, the efficiency of mass production ceases and small enclaves of humans start over again.

Here, have a hanky Shooter, you're dribbling, again.

In a nutshell, yes but even then it is finite, whatever way you look at it, and without a readily available source of energy the answer to that could come sooner than we think.

Nice dodge...how about answering the question - what is overpopulation to you? (feel free to reference another source...I'm just trying to figure out what it means to you)

Well obviously its having more people than the land can sustain.

I believe there are mathematical estimates for such things:

Its not hard to figure out how many calories a person needs per day to survive. From there you can figure out the types of food necessary for a balanced diet - and use that to calculate how much arable/grazing land is needed to provide those calories and how many people can be supported on the available farm land in a region.

So how do you measure unsustainability? Take the U.S. for example. We produce a surplus of agriculture. There are some countries that import more agriculture than they produce. When you get down the nitty gritty details, it's difficult to pinpoint when you reach unsustainability, let alone pinpoint it to population as opposed to consumption.
