war and peace a great book..but hard to read..5 pages on a meadow is too much

Thats why I was bored by it. The story got lost amid some phenomenally descriptive writing. Critically I appreciate its finer points but I just found the story was secondary to describing battles and...like you said, meadows.

OK, I think it's fair to say we will not be reading War & Peace as our first selection  Pardon me if I'm out of line with that prediction.

I've made a dent in Life of Pi and so far it's pretty interesting, although I would qualify as one of those "muddled agnostics" he's talking about, and also one of those people who thinks that animals would rather NOT be in a zoo, unless perhaps it's the only home they've ever known.

That said, I'm going to stick with it and see where it goes. The cover has a picture of a person and a tiger lying on a surfboard (or is it a boat) with sharks swimming all around them, and I'd like to see how that turns out...

Anyone else have any other nominations?

Maya

Books I've read and really liked:

  • Shogun
  • Exodus
  • Starship Troopers (it's nothing like the movie!)
  • Ender's Game
  • Band of Brothers
  • The Happy Hooker
  • Dragonlance (the original three books)
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
  • Frank Herbert's Dune
  • Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns
  • Almost anything written by Harry Turtledove

There's more than that, but I can't remember them at this time.

Life of Pi gets infinitely better once the whole boat thing happens ;) I agree that I was a bit over the whole beginning story part, but once he gets on the lifeboat, I didn't want to put it down. Hang in there!!

So....are we going to vote, or what?

Stick with it for 93 pages, it gets brilliant and ends even better.
