Feinstein: Keep solar/wind energy facilities out of Mojave Desert

Why protect patches of land that 99.9% of the people will never see? So that we continue to use fosil fuels and polute the environment to the point everything dies? Its nice to know some people place more value on some out of the way pieces of land and insignificant animals, rather then fix an even bigger problem.

BTW.... (for those who thought California didn't have any solar panels in the Mojave Desert)

Some solar power plants, like the one in the picture to the right in California's Mojave Desert, use a highly curved mirror called a parabolic trough to focus the sunlight on a pipe running down a central point above the curve of the mirror. The mirror focuses the sunlight to strike the pipe, and it gets so hot that it can boil water into steam. That steam can then be used to turn a turbine to make electricity.

In California's Mojave desert, there are huge rows of solar mirrors arranged in what's called "solar thermal power plants" that use this idea to make electricity for more than 350,000 homes.

Danno, your ideas can be so idiotic at times. The most likely scenarios for large drops in populations are likely going to be starvation (which is already happening in some parts of the world) and disease.

We have been hearing your type predict, doom and gloom for more than fifty years and rather than starve the vast mast majority of people in the world are eating better now than they ever have, in fact, even in some of the Asian countries there is a marked increase in obesity.

With the abundance of food in the world, and the willingness to deliver it by the many agencies (often for free)

Any place we do see starvation we also see a dictator or a government preventing relief and often times causing the emergency.

MC, We have simply heard these world-wide calamity type predictions, decade after decade, the only thing that happens is ... we get a new time line.

You will start to see the effects of urban encroachment in 20 to 30 years. Areas like China and India where urban centers are beginning to reach into and onto farm lands will be more common.

Now as to the original topic. Sen. Feinstein is two faced. She will trade her constituents in for political capital for herself. I'm generally not a big proponent of developing in wildlife areas. However, the mojave desert is torn up day in and day out by off-roaders and campers. I myself have been guilty of it many many times. How is putting in some solar panels of wind turbines more detrimental to the environment?

Obesity has more to do with malnutrition like excess sugars and fats in the diet, not overall food abundance. Starvation and its relief is a far cry from your argument. Move on.
