"French unions have claimed that up to three million people have taken part in street protests amid a national strike against France's economic policies.

Police gave an estimate of 1.2 million people at rallies nationwide.

Schools have been closed and public transport disrupted, with demonstrations held in about 200 towns.

Unions are demanding more is spent to protect workers in the recession. Unemployment has reached two million and is expected to rise further. "

I like France, and the French. So they like to strike? They don't like to open their shops on Mondays either. Different culture, and their markets are brilliant.

It's great the French are enjoying their right to strike.....in France.

I hate strikes because it disrupts me life. NYC transit strike was the week of my finals. I had to pay $150 to take a cab into the city (or walk 3+ hours in December). My school had a TA strike one year. No TAs in classes of 300 plus kids is not a good way to learn. Plus they marched in front of the library and blocked the entrance. I feel people strike too much.

When I lived in Italy, the train workers would strike all the time. One time was right before I was taking a vacation and I ended up having to delay it a day. But that's Italians. I feel blessed when they do any work.

Disruption is the point of striking. It's not much use if no one is inconvenienced. :)

Great, so explain how this is so bad for France and the French?

The influence they can have in government.

That's not very clear, are you suggesting that French Unions have too big a say in French government? Examples please.
