That's wrong, if you get married it doesn't automatically turn into a K3!! I got my SSN a few weeks after marriage and it was a K-1.

Scroll down to Section C on the link below - Policy.... it specifies K-1's. Maybe you can print this out and bring it?

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203500

Also, did you fill out the application before you went?

http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

It's best to fill it and bring it with you.

Hey thank u for your answer. I did file that document and the lady didn't even get me the chance to show it to her, All I was able to told her was: I'm here on a K1 Visa, I just got married and I wanna apply for my SSN. And she was like:Oh, its too late, u already married now and so u are not a K1 nomore. U are a k3 now so u are not entitle for a SSN.

At the moment I was kind of shoked about it and I just walked away but today I wan thinking about it and I really don't think she got it right!!

I think the lady was wrong, that doesn't make sense. I found this info in another thread:

If you look on the guide on how to obtain a SSN here

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203500

which is the document everybody says to print and bring along with you at the office, Section C K-1 is work authorized, and it's the only way you will get your SSN before the 90 days of your K-1 expires.

C. Policy - Employment Authorization by Class of Admission

The following policy applies to employment authorization by class of admission:

1. Aliens Work Authorized Without Specific DHS Authorization

K-1 Fiancé(e) of U.S. citizen

If your I94 doesn't expire until April, you should be elgible to obtain an SSN. I think you should go back and speak to a manager or someone else. I think alot of the time the people at the office aren't used to dealing with immigrants and advise incorrect information. You don't become a K3 just because you got married. That's a whole different Visa!

No problem! I didn't file a change of address, the US address listed on the K-1 application was my fiancee's address and I moved in here so I didn't need to ever change it. Good luck with everything!

Oh ok, I understand! Then it should be the same for me.. the only thing that is worrying me is that I received a letter from USCIS after I already received my K1visa saying that I need to file AR-11 to complete the request of change of address but I never request it...I think it could be their mistake but at this point i better call them on monday to make sure everything is fine right?

Part of this could be down to the name change, too. When you enter on a K1, you are eligible for an SSN. This number is allocated before you can collect the card and the record is held in your maiden name. What you will probably need to do is simply apply for the card in your maiden name. When you receive it, go back with your marriage certificate and maiden name passport and apply to change your surname (and any other names you changed as part of the marriage ceremony).

This seems to be one of the easiest ways to navigate through SSA without lengthy processes and having to explain everything to several people in the same office.

Yes maybe it does have to do with you changing your name.... I kept my maiden name so didn't have to change it with USCIS.

Be firm and ask to speak to a manager, don't let them tell you otherwise. You have a right to apply for your SSN.
