Hello everyone,

my fiance (US) and I are just starting on the affidativ of support. He just talked to his supervisor who told him that they are not authorized to sign a letter for his proof of employment.

He needs to get it through a webpage called theworknumber.com.

I find this very funny.

Has anyone here ever heard of anything like that?

Does it count for the affidativ of support?

Thanks for any answers. I love this forum!

Getting a letter of employment is not very common - most companies wont do it (unlike in Germany where you always get one - especially when you leave).

If you can not get the letter just use as many pay-check stubs as you can (and don't forget to include the tax return and supporting documents).

Ah, ok! Thank you! So sounds like the letter from the employer isn´t that important as long as you can document your work history and salary with other documents.

I guess we´ll try that then.

This thread piqued my curiosity. I went to the "theworknumber" website and it is an HR service that employers use. From some basic reading it looks like you can obtain the employment verification letter there.

Why not get the letter? It's something that USCIS expects to see. No doubt this type of basic HR outsourcing will become more common.

They are protecting themselves from parasitic lawyers.

You dont' really need the letter. His affidavit, plus tax return and check stubs should be all he needs.

I tried it too, Anh. Did you run the demo?

It looks like after you have activated your "theworknumber" account, you then ask interested parties to use the site to activate your information. If looks like it would be helpful in verifying income if you were, say, applying for a mortgage or something like that. I kind of wonder if consulates would use it.........

They might if you attached all your paystubs and explained in your own letter that your employer only gives further information through the site.

Novel new concept.

How are they protecting themselves from 'parasitic lawyers'?

I kind of think they are more likely trying to save managers and other HR people time by using a service like this. Which has probably been developed, by the way, with the assistance of attorneys who would have advised them of the proper manner of verifying employment without creating a "contract" or "guarantee" of employment with employees.

Haha...I know EXACTLY what you are talking about...I worked from 1999-2004 for a large technical company in the US that makes microprocessors (you can guess who) and they told me the same thing in 2005 when I tried to get proof of prior employment for my skilled migrant visa to New Zealand.

I was able to print the webpage from theworknumber.com and use that with my visa application to show prior employment. It was accepted OK by NZ immigration.

I think if you have your US fiance print the info from theworknumber.com, the embassy/consulate should accept that, because they probably know what it is. Also, if your fiance sends you a few of his recent pay stubs, that should work too.

As stated before, actually letters of employment aren't as commonly requested in the US as they are in Europe and elsewhere. I don't know why.
