visiting canada by land

Hi guys, I read oline that by June this year LPR can visit Canada by land using just green card, without passport. Passport from my country requires visa to go to Canada, but I understand that with green card I do not need it. Also my passport is expired. Will I be able to cross the border by car?

And what is needed for USC? Just DL or we need my husband's birth certificate as well? His passport expired too.

Canada visa

persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence;

This is TRUE.

My wife is from China, and if she were not a permanent resident of USA she would need a visa to visit Canada.

She has a green-card, and this is all that we have needed for our 3 trips to Toronto over the past 2 years, NO VISA.

US Citizen WILL need PROOF of citizenship (Passport, Border crossing card, or birth cert)

Just a reminder- after June 1, the US citizen will require a passport in order to re-enter the US, even from a visit to Canada. The final phase of the WHTI (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) comes into effect then. It would be a good idea for the OP to renew her passport as well. She is still a foreign national even though she lives in the US and it is always a good idea to have a valid passport for your own country available.

Note, if US citizen travels into and out of Canada or Mexico often they can get a border crossing card "Passport-Card" and some states like NY also offer an enhanced drivers license that will act as a border crossing card.
