The statement said Li attacked McLean "for no apparent reason" and ignored other horrified passengers as he repeatedly stabbed the young man, who unsuccessfully fought for his life.

The other passengers were cowards. Li had time to carve up and eat body parts. What were passengers doing outside the bus, having a picnic?

Yes. It is such a shame you were not on the bus, complete with cape and pants on outside your tights. Everyone should travel with an alien hero.

 Since when does common sense qualify us to dish out professional medical opinions?

ever since professional medical opinions included things like bleeding a patient ;)

Medical science has evolved sicne then, but base human instincts have not.

always trust your instincts

It's doesn't take a hero when you've got multiple passengers to beat up a 40 year-old Chinese guy armed with knife.

Ever notice how hijackings stopped after 9/11? Airline passengers figure they're doomed if they don't fight back. Bus passengers sit outside and listen to guy getting carved up and eaten.

So Cleo, what would you do, wait for UN peacekeepers or just say bon appetit!?

Of course, what self respecting hippy librul, with the requisite gay poodle, wouldn't?

Of course, you are right, these passengers should be indicted as well as accessories after the fact. Glad we got that all cleared up.

Its easy to claim that you would, with certainty, act in a certain way when confronted with an extreme situation - from the comfort of your armchair.

Another thing entirely when its happening in front of your face. People panic and lose rationality when they're scared.

When it comes to medicine, I'd rather trust someone qualified to opine. I'm not and unless you have an MD, neither are you.

That was an offhand comment for the media not a medical diagnosis.

I'm sure other qualfied MDs said Li wasn't a threat but they were wrong. Treating mental illness isn't an exact science.

But prior to 9/11, passengers typically would be cooperative with hijackers because up until that time, hijackers weren't trying to kill everyone on board the plane.

In a bizarre incident like the beheading, it's difficult to know just how quickly the events took place. If you were on that bus, but were several rows away, you wouldn't have a clue what just happened except for seeing the reaction of the rows behind you.

Then there's the impluse to save others which clearly was absent here probably because I guess nobody knew the victim or the killer or felt the need to intervene. In some cases no one does anything because they assume someone else will react but in this case the bus passengers must have known nobody was on the bus while the sole victim was getting killed.

We have already established that all bus passengers are equally liable and should in fact all stand trial. No one on that bus acted responsibly and we are grateful to you, oh wonderful Alien, for pointing out just what scum these bus passengers were. Who travels by bus anyway? Only poor people, so that really explains everything.

that's fine, i just think it's a crock to say the guy (aka the perp) still breathing is as much a victim as the guy (aka victim) who's dead.

Somebody must have seen it or they wouldn't have had a stampede to get off the bus. It's safe to assume bus came to stop at some point for passengers to flee. Naturally, they must have discussed what they saw. They opted collectively to sit it out. Perhaps they were all old people or kids unable to handle a single attacker.

Its even more simple than that - people panic, and self-preservation takes over. Isn't that why people get trampled during a stampede.

I'm sure some of the passengers now wish they had tried to do something. I can't judge them for it, not knowing how I would react myself.

The folks on the 9/11 flight who attacked the hijackers didn't do so immediately - the initial shock and surprise at the takeover had to wear off first.
