There's a lot of $hit people don't know, but what are you going to do? Its not like you can control the level of intelligence and education of people you meet.

A few years ago some people in the UK quite famously confused pediatrician with pedophile. What can anyone say to such reasoning? Not a great deal...

My point totally escaped you two, pretty much this - because I cant control the level of intelligence and education of people I meet(that's why I said there not going to pull out a laptop and google it before they kick my a@#)it is up to me to make sure that I dont become a victim. There will always be plenty of stupid people

I am totaly confused. Some have replied as if the term coonhound was suggested as racist term - thats not what was said in the original post.

I was told by a cousin that ####### was racist term.

####### *is* a racist term, not coonhound. I dont know any situation where one would refer to their coonhound as *#######* so why is this even an issue?

"#######" isn't used to refer to a coonhound, but to what a coonhound hunts, i.e., a racoon.

I realize coonhound comes from hound that hunts racoons. Im just saying - who would say my hound hunts 'coons (and therefore inadvertantly be using a racist term)?

Still the cousin is right - ####### is a racist term - although it has nothing to do with the breed of dog.

calling a raccoon '#######' = not racist

calling a black person '#######' = racist

How exactly are going to ensure that you don't become a victim?

by being informed of this word, and making sure I dont use it in situations that might jeopardize my safety. For example I live in a small town with little crime and when I run into the store I often will keep my car running. I wouldn't do this in a bad neighborhood. I wouldn't use the word coonhound as freely in south central as I would in my small town here that consists of few blacks. I would imagine there is probably a fair share of people in south central that wouldn't know it to be a recognized breed of dog or would think I was just using that as a excuse to use the word. Lets face it when in comes to racist terms that refer to blacks there is alot of animosity, justified or not it is what it is.

Cur is slang for a$$, yet my dog's breed is a Catahoula Cur. If I say her breed name, will people assume I'm using slang for a$$?

So your telling me from this response im quoting now that you are saying that your other response in which you underlined "Its not like you can control the level of intelligence and education of people you meet." wasnt directed towards me, hmmm not sure Im on board with that cause it sure seemed like it was, maybe next time you can be more thorough and cut down on the confusion.

Its a pretty weird conversation to have in everyday life - to make a special effort when out walking the dog in "bad neighbourhoods" to not mention the breed of dog in the event that someone asks.

I mean... how does researching the word make much of a difference to anything if the conversation its likely to be used in relation to isn't likely to come up....
