I am worried as to wherther my being outside the country will affect my husbands citizenship petition. I mean will they ask for me to be at the interview.. I ahve travelled to his country to help care for his sick father withthe kids and start a business. I just pray that they wont look at it as a bad thing that I am not there with him. Any one with advice or who has been in this position pls advise.

Not needed, but if you are the USC they might ask to see you. It's happened . July filer Lyuba was asked to call her husband in. She had to call him at work and have him come to the USCIS office. Good luck. Always be prepared, you can never say what the IO might ask from the person.

My brothers wife had her interview this week in Boston a guy sat next to them was not approved on the day because his wife was at work and could not get there to answer the interviewing officers questions, He was given another appointment time for just the interview part so his wife could attend.

Just a heads up.

I think if they really want to talk to the spouse, they should mention that on the invitation. People don't have a lot of leave days, sometimes they have important appointments, business trips etc. Of course the citizenship interview is VERY important. But if you don't know that you're expected to be there, you might not go if you have other urgent business etc. Especially if you read in forums like this one, that a lot of times the spouse is not allowed to attend the interview.

Well...I agree, if they want spouse to be presense, why not say it in the interview appointment letter? I think it depends on the interview IO. But from reading here, better be over-prepared then less-prepared. I'm going to grab my hubby along no matter how busy he is. We've all been waiting too long for this citizenship interview, just don't want to mess up by the end of the tunnel.

Regardless the need for interview, I would recommend the spouse's presence just for their support.

It will be easier for interviewee's moral support, and after all done, they can celebrate their progress.

Basically in most cases, USCIS adjudicator may not look at the case in detail until interview moment.

So during interview process, anything can happen.

We can hope more from the government agency, but there is a reason why we have the term of beaurocracy for.

If they can't do that, I guess we have to prepare for every possibility just in case.

The requirement for spouse's presence is not happening to everybody.

It is a kind of random checking.

So in most case, it may not be an issue, but in very rare cases, you may have unlucky situation to be asked for your spouse's presence.

As we heard, better over-prepared than hearing "sorry!".

That would be too easy Stella. They like to make our lives difficult. =)

My wife came to the building with me, waited in the waiting room with me, and that was it. She did not come into the interview. I saw others come with their USA spouse---both would get up when the applicants name was called, but the USA citizen would be sent back to her seat, while the applicant went for their interview! But as you have read on here, a few USA citizens do get called to the interview, so the interviewer can make a decision! And yes it does probably matter where the applicants home country is. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

My wife's IO totally ignored me, but did want my wife to show her all my papers. Her IO must have been from Nazi Germany.
