So.... you got a lot of vagrant meth addicts roaming the Kansas countryside?

don't know if they are vagrants, but it's not unusual for homes to be broken into in the country - less neighbors, less police presence.

personally i think they all wander over from missouri ^_^

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

That could be. I was at a truck stop and went and sat down to eat in Missouri Ozarks once and noticed everyone looked the same.

Speaking of Missouri I have to go into St. Louis in the morning. Fun fun.

Been there. Fort Leonard Wood. Black hair. Black Beard. Jean overalls. The gene pool is a little shallow around those parts.

Removing the firing mechanism and storing it separately defeats the self-defense purpose. The more steps involved in readying the gun for firing, the more precious time is lost, diminishing your chances of using the gun to defend yourself. Now, if the only reason you have a gun is for hobby shooting or collecting, and it wouldn't occur to you to actually use it for defense, then sure, keep everything separately.

No offense Scott, but really....

Does the peace of mind you get to potentially defend yourself against an imaginary intruder outweigh any fear that a small child might get curious about your gun?

An intruder is no more imaginary than a small child wandering about my house on their own. I have no children, and I don't allow them in my house unsupervised. If I do have children here, they will be with their parents, and I would ensure that my gun is out of reach for the time they were here.

And I don't see how having a gun makes a person more of a man.

Having a gun doesn't make a person "more of a man," nor does not having one do so. Machismo is not the issue. Nice red herring, though ;) Btw, many women own guns, too. Are they trying to be "more of a man?"

I don't think it's a red herring.

I do think it's a mighty touchy subject though.

Makes no sense to me.

Makes absolutely no sense to me that a person like me - who opposes gun ownership, but understands that it is YOUR RIGHT to own a gun - why when I ask you a question about dumbing down your weapons in the interest of safety or civilized society that you try to dazzle me with BS about why you can't?

Do you really think I am that stupid? Do you think other people like me are that stupid? Do you not understand that by being so - well - insultingly smug - that you don't do yourself any favors?

I realize women own guns. They likely own them to protect themselves from MALE intruders. Now - tell me where you think the machismo begins and ends?

I respond to your insinuation that people have guns to be "more of a man" and I'm the one being "smug"?? If it is rational for a woman to own a gun for protection against a male intruder, why wouldn't it be equally rational for a man to own a gun for the same reason?

And my safety is diminished when I limit my means of defense as you've suggested. Civilized society has nothing to fear from my gun, since civilized people won't be invading my home.

so um, what makes you think my guns are not organized? i know where every one of them is - and currently only one firearm is outside of the gun safe.

Well, if that's true, then you should have no problem matching up the firing mechanism to it's proper gun!

See how easy that was!

so you're saying i need to take the firing mechanism out of the gun and outside of the safe? a safe that would require a blowtorch to get into?

maybe it's just me, but that sure don't pass the common sense test.

here's some pics for you
