How long Do I need to wait to file our tax return electronically?

Hello, I just got my SSN yesterday and we filed our federal income tax return electronically and it was rejected due to:

Here's the reason for the rejection:

Error Code 0503: The secondary taxpayer's Social Security number and last name do not match what the IRS has in its records. The IRS receives this information from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

What name does the Social Security Administration have?

What name did you use to file taxes?

(edit: guessing there was a name change involved with the immigrating party)

Sheesh...another thing to wait on in this immigration process!!

You could just print it and mail it in. Done and dusted without having to wonder how long it takes for them to update records.

The mail option is a good one. I think SS updates IRS every 10-14 days or so.

Are you certain her name matches the SS card? Might have two last names in that box.

So they get the return by mail, and possibly reject it for the same reason? Why is that a good idea? That'd be even more of a pain to deal with.

Might be better to keep resubmitting electronically (once per month or so)... I think most e-File providers will not charge for this

They will sort it out on a paper return. The efile returns have to be very specifically coded to work so things get kicked out of those.

Another question, if wife doesn't have green card, is she a resident alien or nonresident alien? I was just thinking a lot of people have to submit the written/signed by both statement by mail to elect for the new alien spouse to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes in order to file a joint return. That's why I mailed the return, to keep all that together.

Exactly same thing happened to us - the first year - I then resubmitted with her maiden name and it was accepted.

Paper route is a good idea but it delays refunds - you can attach a copy of marriage certificate to the paper return (that will then be proof of the person being legit) and if you use direct deposit - it will still be a bit faster. Good Luck

I believe that message is refering to myself....my wife is a primary tax payer and I'm the secondary tax payer. I just applied for my SSN last thursday and asked for printout of my SSN and filed our return elctronically. After the rejection, i'm thinking that may be my SSN number is not yet in the IRS system.

How long does it take to get the confimation from IRS if the federal tax return has been accepted or rejected by mailing our return instead of filing electronically? The most important thing this time is to make sure that our tax return has been accepted.
