Supposedly in the order it was received. I'm sure that difficulties in a case would slow things down and the cases behind would then move ahead of the difficult case. That would make things seem like they are not working first come first serve.

I was wondering... how does the vermont service center process the cases, by the order in which it was received or just randomly picking the cases out?

I think the process is something like the following:

  • Grab a dusty box from a dusty shelf that is full of applications from poor souls that have been waiting for months
  • Go for a coffee break
  • Open the box
  • Go for a cigarette break
  • Grab a file
  • Call a 1-900 for some phone sex
  • Open the file folder
  • Notice there are lots of papers in it
  • Close the file
  • Go for lunch
  • Open the file again, see the papers are still there
  • Close the file again and go for a Cigarette break
  • Open the file again, notice the papers still there
  • Groan about the papers, close the file again, get in the car and drive to starbucks
  • Get back from starbucks, open the file again
  • Groan, because the papers are still there,
  • Close the file, and go home and hope the papers are not there when you get in...

But in reality, they process them roughly in the order received. If you look at your receipt number it is coded by the year, day, and order received. The 3 letters indicate the processing center (EAC is Vermont, WAC is California), the next two digits are the fiscal year (begins Oct 1), the next 3 are the "working day" (so 015 is the 15th working day of the fiscal year), and the last 5 represents the case number (all begin with a 5, so 50062 means it is 62nd for that day). But don't forget these are put in boxes and different boxes grabbed by different people, so you can see in the end it is roughly in order, but not exactly.

Wait, please forgive me. I should have used the term "Theoretical Working Day" as oppost to "Actual Working Day". Theoretical working day refers to the number of days that theoretically, someone, if they were doing what they were paid to do, would have worked. In other words, most Mondays through Fridays (not counting holidays). So the number would be the TWDs since October 1, 2008. My TWD is 104 which is Thursday Feb 26. Your TWD was 12 working days before mine - 92 which is Monday Feb 9 (there was some holiday in between... so there were only 12 TWDs between us.

In contrast, "Actual Working Day" is the number of days people at the USCIS actually work. That is about 10-15 days per fiscal year (not counting coffee breaks).

wow that means that mine was the 407th one for that day? Is that for all petitions or just K1?

And if the 3rd and 4th numbers after the EAD is the day then my day is Feb 9 and not Feb 10. Wonder why I thought it was Feb 10? Oh I just read the "case status online" and it says "On February 10, 2009 we received your petition...." What's up with that?

i'm just hoping the 3 digits that follow the first 2 digits will be the days in which my case will be processed ... this waiting gets frustrated on weekends since I have nothing to do. I work during the weekdays which forces me to keep my mind of the processing time
