In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans — and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team — understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

Protecting the country’s security is “a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business,” he said. “These are evil people. And we’re not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek.”

..

He said he worried that “instead of sitting down and carefully evaluating the policies,” Obama officials are unwisely following “campaign rhetoric” and preparing to release terrorism suspects or afford them legal protections granted to more conventional defendants in crime cases.

The choice, he alleged, reflects a naive mindset among the new team in Washington: “The United States needs to be not so much loved as it needs to be respected. Sometimes, that requires us to take actions that generate controversy. I’m not at all sure that that’s what the Obama administration believes.”

He makes a very valid point there.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Its that same point that is a recruiting tool for terrorists as well... that the US has no ethics when it come to their own laws in order to justify killing muslims.

If we're hit again before 2012 and if the GOP can convince the public (I believe they can) that Obama's bleeding heart is why it happened, then the American people will elect Cheney's corpse if they can.

No he doesn't. All he's doing is trying to justify his and President Bush's actions - by suggesting that there was no choice other than that which they made - and that those who disagree with those choices don't have the country's interests at heart.

Its the same old divisive claptrap they've been pushing on the public for the last 8 years.

9/11 was a once in a lifetime event. I doubt we'll see anything like that happen in this country again for a very long time.

That's what they said the first time when some terrorists tied to blow up the WTC in 1993. Nope, will never happen again. :dead:

Sound like the post-WWI refrain, "the war to end all wars."

9/11 was a once in a lifetime event. I doubt we'll see anything like that happen in this country again for a very long time.

The United States and its allies have thwarted at least 10 serious al Qaeda terrorist plots since Sept. 11, 2001, including never-before-disclosed plans to use hijacked commercial airliners to attack the East and West coasts in 2002 and 2003, President Bush and his aides said yesterday.

The reported plots aimed to strike a wide variety of targets, including the Library Tower in Los Angeles, ships in international waters and a tourist site overseas, the White House said last night. Three of the 10 were directed at U.S. soil, officials said. The government, they added, also stopped five al Qaeda efforts to case possible targets or infiltrate operatives into the country.

Most of the plots were previously reported in some form; a few were revealed yesterday. The White House had never before placed a number or compiled a public list of the foiled attempts to follow up the Sept. 11 attacks, but it offered scant information beyond the location and general date of each reported plot -- making it difficult to assess last night how serious or advanced they were or what role the government played in preventing them.

Maybe, somebody was paying attention in the last administration. Question is, "Who is watching over us now?"

That's what "who" said?

In any case - the 1993 didn't succeed in destroying the towers...

Terrorism is a fact of life - most of the time its foiled or comes to nothing.

9/11 was unprecedented in a lot of ways.

Its a meaningless question though. Might as well as who was watching over us in all those previous administrations where there were no major terrorist events...
