I'm not really familliar with the American Tax system... I do have a question do you guys have to pay to get a copy of the Federal tax return, form 1040? I thought you can get those for free if you contacted IRS... but it seems that I need to pay about $57 for each copy!

any insight please

Thanks in advance

1040 is a FREE form, where did you get that price from???

If you are referring to a tax transcript, those too are FREE for simple transcripts, which is fine for affidavit of support.

In cases where an exact copy of the return is not needed, tax return and transcripts may be ordered.

  • The tax return transcript shows most line items contained on the return as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules.

  • In most cases, a tax return transcript will meet the requirements for lending institutions for mortgage verification purposes.

  • The transcript can be ordered by completing a Form 4506-T (PDF) or calling 800-829-1040 and following the prompts in the recorded message.

  • There is no charge for the transcript and you should receive it in 10 business days from the time we receive your request.

  • Tax return transcripts are generally available for the current and past three years.

If you want the forms for filing 1040 you can usually pick them up free at local Libraries........try that. I always get mine there.

But if you want copies of past 1040......I am not sure.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, the forms are free, just go to the IRS website, all you need is a PDF reader. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

I take it you are speaking of ordering a copy of you spouse's past tax returns. No need to pay for copies. Just order the free transcripts. Presumably, there's a US Citizen petitioner involved in this case. It's usually best to have them obtain the supporting documentation for their I-134, as they will have some working understanding of US tax and employment documents.

Im also confused..what is the difference between TAX TRANSCRIPT anf FEDERAL TAX RETURN????...my husband got TAX TRANSCRIPT FOR 3 yrs is that right? or still need the FEDERAL TAX RETURN?

The tax transcript is an acceptable and (sometimes preferred) substitute for a complete tax return.

a related question:

i am filling out an I-134 to be safe but all my income is from a non-american company overseas, so i don't think my income counts anyway.

regarding my tax returns...do they need to be the returns from the IRS directly or can they be copies of the forms my accountant sent to the IRS?

i assume they will be only looking at these for domicile purposes anyway, we have a co sponsor.

thanks for you help,

kristin
