News can be interesting. It can invite discussion, without which, the off-topic forum would be quite boring. In any event, if you dislike the topic at hand, you don't have to engage in it. No one is forcing you to discuss anything or even enter this forum.

Topics can still be discussed without the need to post the whole story....often I don't have the time to trawl through a long post.

I also know that I am not being forced to be in off topic, I just happen to be addicted to VJ and freqent a number of forums not just off topic

Without the entire story (or even a link to such), the discussion would be quite limited. In addition, without evidence of the original story, the only thing to work off of would be someone else's retelling of events, which may or may not be accurate.

I tend to agree. However, there are people on here who're simply too lazy to click on a link. Perhaps even more important, is that sometimes people will post "false links" (which can lead to NSFW sites) and some websites have annoying banners/pop-ups. If posting the entire story on here, those can all be avoided.
