same kind of cut-backs happened in NJ last year. I've been out of school for a year and can't get a teaching job due to the fact that there are no jobs available. 1 out of 7 student teachers in my class secured a contract. i made more $ before i spent $50,000 on college. now i have to get a co-sponsor for my K1 and hopefully won't be homeless before my SO arrives.

Try a private school. That's what my wife ended up doing. Money sucks but it's experience.

ps. we're also in nj

Nothing at all has opened for public school teachers for the last six months here, I can tell you from experience. When one has years of teaching experience, and has completed his/her masters, yet still doesn't get in for an interview, that's not a good situation. I'm waiting until spring for some more possibilities to open up. I can't count the ways I've been trying to diversify just to stay in education. Have you seen what's going on with state colleges in NY? Cutbacks everywhere; they're keeping most positions open now, even though they still post openings. However, all you get for your efforts is a letter saying that because of budget cuts, they are not going to fill the position, try again some other time. My friends who are still lucky enough to be working in public schools and colleges all tell the same story; they are expected to pick up the slack from all of the layoffs, and still being told they shouldn't expect all of the benefits and luxuries they had before (yeah, that's a joke). Some are even being expected to put in a week or so of work, for free!

Why didn't I get my degree in special education? It's the only thing that might still get you an interview here. Hindsight is 20/20.... :(

i thought we needed MORE teachers in urban areas...

i'm sure LA county's classrooms are not undercrowded.

It's over California's huge deficit problem. The state Republicans don't want to raise taxes, so the entire state budget is going to have to be gutted. Stupid, shortsighted, duma$$es.

Surely, you're joking. The Democrats have controlled the legislature since 1970 and has big majorities in both houses now.

Blame it all on Arnold.

What I heard when I was over there is that the disagreement was over cutting budgets (which the Republicans want to do) Vs. raising taxes (which the Democrats want to do). Usual round of ideological claptrap.

I lived in Los Angeles for awhile and I got the impression from my aunt and uncle that the public schools in LA aren't very good. My cousin went to the Santa Monica Montessori School for a crazy amount of money. Public school was laughed at by them and anyone I met. Just curious if it's really THAT bad?

California schools used to be the best or near the top and now they are near bottom.

I wonder if the 3 million illegals with dismal Mexican and Central American education histories

had anything to do with that...

imagine that

Husband_of_Mahmoud is going to come in any second now and tell you how it's the Republicans' fault

that the schools are crappy.

No, it's the messicans fault.

Your a BIGOT!

I've joined your party, Marc. Will you send me my commemorative coffee mug?

You dont have to do that , your in the right party. I had a couple mugs left but I sent them to senate democrats, they seem to be showing what bigots they are too with Roland Burris.

Can't speak for LA, but i was educated in Jersey public schools. i think it was a good education (80's and 90's) and i think i was forced to work harder b/c there were so many kids in my graduating class, and i knew i would be competing w/ private school kids for spots at the best colleges. but that was totally mine and my parents' initiative. i think public education and standards have changed over the years for all sorts of reasons.

i'm sad to hear that good teachers cannot even find public school jobs in Jersey. a lot of nepotism i think, and who knows who to get a job, which is crazy. i would like to go back to teaching in a few years, if possible.

Nevermind.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines announced Friday that there would be no mid-year teacher layoffs.

"It is our responsibility to make the best decisions for our students based on the information that is available to us," Cortines said. "Due to the lack of clear information from Sacramento, the need for stability at schools in the second semester and the high level of interest in a retirement incentive program, there will be no mid-year teacher layoffs.

I had my taxes done in Ripon, CA yesterday. The guy who did them told me California was issuing I.O.U.'s instead of rebates?
