We're a bit confused as to which needs to be done first, the SSN or the adjustment of status form and all of it's 'trimmings'. We understand what needs to be accomplished in order to receive a SSN and have already put the works into motion (approximately 4 weeks ago now). We followed these instructions to the letter...

Now, here we are 4 weeks later and no card. We visited the local office a few days ago and they said the the info we presented to the office was at the office of homeland security and the SSN office was waiting for DHS. There WAS a name change when the marriage was conducted, so we're wondering if THAT is the reason everything seems to be in a holding pattern?

Any and all comments would be greatly appreciated!

thank you!

Michael and Maxine

what is the arrival status? what visa? answers may depend on that information

ETA: I see it was K-1... You can apply from day one to day 76 after your arrival on a K-1. If outside that window then you need to wait until EAD/GC

name change can affect the length of time because immigration status needs to be verified

Yep, it's a K-1 - we applied for the SSN after we got married well within the date range(s)... So now we're wondering of course whether the name change put a wrench into the gears... (or a spanner into the works as my british bride would say!)

path of least resistance has always been SSN in K-1 name and then after receipt of card at some point do a name change....

My husband and I (the USC) did my name change and his application at the same time. Mine took about two weeks to arrive and his took 4-5 weeks. If you did name change and application at the same time I imagine it could take a bit. You can file for AOS without the number if you don't want to wait for it. :)

See my timeline for my K-1 and AOS/EAD/AP details.
