Are we not legally married?

I was married in Costa Rica over two years ago to a Costa Rican. We live in California and he has his 10 year green card. My question is we NEVER took the marriage license from Costa Rica and had it validated here. This did not seem to matter for getting the green card, but will it matter for anything else? I was just thinking that we ever wanted to get divorced here, we really cant because there is no record of the marriage here. We just have our marriage license from Costa Rica. We file our taxes together and have joint acocunts etc. and I really dont want to have it validated here if there is no reason too.

You shouldn't need to have foreign marriages validated/registered here. From what I understand if it's legally recognized in Costa Rica (or any other foreign country), then it's legally recognized here.

You do not need to register a foreign marriage in the USA.

USCIS and DOS recognized the marriage, therefor you got a spousal visa, and US Green-card.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Your marriage is legal in Costa Rica and the US, no need for validation. If it hadn't been legal the USCIS and the embassy wouldn't have processed your husband's residency.

Agree with all the above. A marriage celebrated according to the laws of the place where it took place is considered a legal marriage in the U.S. for immigration purposes and ANY other purposes, there is no need to re- validate the marriage or register it, it has been already registered in Costa Rica according to their laws.. I also wanted to add, that what you have is your Marriage Certificate from Costa Rica, not a marriage license from Costa Rica. For what i know there isn't such document under the Costa Rican civil law.
