Travelling with AP---JFK review

Last weekend, my wife and I travelled back to her country (Costa Rica). Everything went smoothly. Coming back to the US, she used her AP. At the airport in Costa Rica, they photocopied the AP for their own records. At JFK, I went to the IO with her. The guy asked for the AP, so we gave him both copies. He put the passport and AP in the folder and asked us to go to secondary processing. There, they stamped one of the copies and gave them both back to us and that was it. Even though the passport and the AP were under different last names, we were never asked for a marriage certificate. But I'd still recommend having one when travelling on documents where the last names don't match.
