Two new studies out this week add to the body of research evidence clearly showing again that abortion is associated with increased risk of adverse mental health effects. The two peer-reviewed papers were published in the British Journal of Psychiatry and the Journal of Psychiatric Research. Both had strong methodology and controls for confounding or alternate variables.

"The results of both studies add to the strong body evidence detailing the causal association between abortion and mental health disorders," said Moira Gaul, Family Research Council's Director of Women's and Reproductive Health. "Additionally, these findings continue to reinforce important implications concerning informed consent in health care. Women in this country deserve quality health care which provides accurate information on the associated risks accompanying abortion," added Gaul.

"Women are increasingly coming forward to share about the negative impact abortion has played in their lives. Clinicians treating women for mental health disorders are increasingly stepping forward to tell the truth about the large numbers seeking treatment due to the fallout from abortion. These studies dispel the repeated lies from the pro-abortion community that abortion is a 'non-event' or somehow 'therapeutic' in women's lives. This substantial body of scientific evidence warrants a government longitudinal study," concluded Moira Gaul.

Hehe this is like the telephone game where it gets distorted with every telling. Next step will be that abortion causes schizophrenia.

The study found a relationship between abortion and mental health disorders. No surprise there. I'm sure there's a strong association between dysfunctional relationships, unwanted pregnancy, and mental health disorders. That's blindingly obvious.

There is nothing in that article to say that the scientific study conducted in the UK pointed to a causal relationship. That press release came from The Family Research Council, which is a US based Christian fundamentalist think tank. Certainly they think the relationship is causal, and they are trying hard to make it look like the evidence fits their beliefs. However, if you read the article carefully you'll find that the relationship part comes from the study and the alleged causality comes from the church people. The part talking about the British study says nothing about causality. Very sneaky.

Now I'm not saying that abortion is for everyone. If you are strongly fundamentalist and really believe that abortion is a mortal sin which will see you burning in hell for eternity, then I wouldn't recommend it to you. Yea, it might even cause some mental health disorders if you had one. But don't try to convince the rest of us who don't share your beliefs that having an abortion will somehow make us nuts.

There is also a pretty strong connection between having kids too young and low quality of life. Likewise between preventing access to abortions and women dying in botched back alley abortions. Granted I can't quote a study off the top of my head to back those up but I'm sure there are some there if anyone cares to look. Anyway i just hate to see research misused and distorted.

I love that we can't have the findings directly but that it must be packaged in a way that politicizes the issue.

Shame on the pro-choice community for making abortion out to be a walk in the park. Shame on me for having a pro choice view because obviously I think having an abortion is not unlike watching Saturday morning cartoons in jammies, with big bowl of ice cream!

Traumatic!? That's just crazy talk!

Buy one, get one free!

Everyone should have one - and a bag of candy canes handed out at the end!

I think all guys should have an abortion at least once in their lifetimes.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

yea, I'm not saying that abortion is great(it's a miserable experience), or that it never contributes to mental health disorders(I'm sure it does in some cases). However, it burns me to see fearmongers distort and misrepresent a legitimate scientific study to give the impression that having an abortion is likely to cause mental health problems, when the the study doesn't actually show that.

In High School at 18 I got pregnant with my 27 year old college boyfriend. When I told him he started crying. Here was this grown man crying in front of me and I didn't know what to do. He told me we had to get an abortion. He didn't explain why but I knew that I wasn't going to be raising a kid alone. My family always told me if I got pregnant then don't come home. So we had an abortion. I wrote an essay about it later in college. There were protesters there lined against the sidewalk with bloody aborted fetus signed and their kids the day we went to have one. My boyfriend borrow his Mom's company van cos his car was in the shop. She owned a Christian Book Store. So we drove into the parking lot with this christian bookstore name on the side of the van and these protesters lined up with their signs silently. We went inside and it was very nerve racking. The nurse said if I did't want to have one she would out there and tell my boyfriend I couldn't have it because of medical reasons. She made him come in and watch the video with me that explains the procedure. He started crying again. In the waiting room there was this mother of 3 kids with a big tummy telling me this would have been their 4th kid but they just couldn't afford it. She was 10 weeks but she looked like she was bigger than that with a very noticeable round belly. Afterwords in the recovery room it was painted this soft pink with pink recliners around the room and there was this woman wailing in the corner on a mattress they laid down. I saw that mother of four again and they sat me next to her. She was silently crying and we didn't talk much. On the radio the station played "everybody hurts" by REM and I thought it was ironic. They made me wait for an hour it seemed like before they would release me. When I went outside my boyfriend held one of my arms for support and the protesters were still there watching us. I saw their signs again and I went around to the front of the van and vomited. Then they lowered their signs for some reason and we slowly drove out of there. My boyfriend took me to a small greasy spoon and tried to order me some blue berry pancakes and proceed to talk to me about it. I wasn't hungry and I didn't want to talk about it. He took me to his apartment and laid me down on his bed to rest and went outside to talk to his room mate. They went outside for awhile and then I cried. I was sad about it for several months and then summer came and and life went on. He broke up with me almost a year after that. It was an odd bond between us and I was really heart broken because I really loved him. He was my first love. I hadn't thought about the abortion in a long time till last night when I was watching this episode of south park online and they were referencing some material about it. I actually made me sad again for the first time in a long time and now this morning I read this. I can say it links to depression but I don't know about other disorders or their controlled environments.

I don't really care about spelling and grammar at this point.
