Quick question on joint insurance

My Wife got her benefits packet for her new full-time job in the mail today, and it has spousal insurance. I don't have a SSN or a greencard yet, can she add me as a joint insurance? And is this a good bona fide relationship proof?

05/29/2008 --- Entry into the US on Visa Waiver to visit my girlfriend for a summer holiday and to help take care of her sick father where needed.

06/20/2008 -- After the sad passing of my girlfriend's father, we decided to get married and stay together

08/08/2008 --- We get married, lovely ceremony and dinner with all of Sarah's family present :-)

08/25/2008 --- AOS package sent to Chicago via Fedex overnight priority mail. Fingers crossed now!

08/26/2008 -- AOS Package received in Chicago, signed for by A.Smith (1 day before my VWP expires!)

09/02/2008 -- Checks cashed!!

09/03/2008 -- NOA1 received for I-485, I-130 and I-765.

09/05/2008 -- Case is shown online as pending!!

09/08/2008 -- Biometrics appointment letter received for September 23rd!! (For both I-485 and I-765)

09/12/2008 -- Biometrics walk-in completed, 11 days before the appointment! In Hackensack NJ.

09/20/2008 -- RFE for I-485 received. It was dated September 17.

09/25/2008 -- RFE response evidence sent out to Lee's Summit by USPS, certified mail.

10/02/2008 -- RFE response evidence received and case processing resumed!

11/04/2008 -- EAD CARD PRODUCTION ORDERED! Thank you Lord.

11/10/2008 -- EAD card received in the mail! wOOt wOOt!!!!

11/12/2008 -- SSN ordered from Hackensack, 2-4 weeks in mail!

11/28/2008 -- SSN Received in the mail, wOOt!!!!!!!!

12/7/2008 -- INTERVIEW LETTER RECEIVED!!! It's scheduled February 19, 2009 at 8:30am in Newark. *nerves*

2/19/2009 -- Interview 8:30am - Green Card verbally approved

2/23/2009 -- Welcome letter received! followed by I-130 approval notice!

Two part answer:

1) Your wife needs to contact her HR department or the insurance company to determine what is needed to add you to her insurance. My husband added me without anything more than my name. My insurance in Canada would not let me add him unless he had a social insurance number. Usually the HR person will know what is needed.

2) Yes that is proof of a bona fides relationship if you need that for immigration purposes. If she has life insurance through work as well, she can add you as a beneficiary and that would assist in showing a bona fides relationship.

Edit: This is probably good proof of a valid relationship coupled with the fact that you're sharing an address and presumably sharing a life together. :hehe:

perhaps it depends upon the insurance company/company you work for.

my wife has no ssn or green card either but I have added her as my spouse for insurance

My Timeline:

2/27/2007 sent I-129f

5/??/2007 USCIS needed additional info

7/23/2007 I-129f approved

8/3/2007 NVC approves application

8/27/2007 NVC sends approval notice to Seoul embassy

9/6/2007 Seoul embassy finally receives application/filed for interview

9/21/2007 worried about interview

10/13/2007 K-1 approved.

10/20/2007 Arrived in Ameriva

10/29/2007 Filed for marriage certificate

11/24/2007 Filed for AOS I-485 and AP

12/18/2007 Received RFE (overpaid, had to resend check)

1/24/2008 USCIS resumed application process/biometrics appt received

2/04/2008 Biometrics appt

4/??/2008 AP approved and received

9/??/2008 AOS interview schedule received

10/22/2008 AOS interview

11/3/2008 RFE received and returned

FAST FORWARD to Dec 2012. US CITIZEN!!

I received my own card - however it has my husband's name on it and not mine.

Our medical cards have usually had either my name or both of our names on them. The main insured is my husband. Definitely it is worth being added to her insurance - first because it gets you health insurance and you definitely want/need that, and second, because it is good evidence of a bona fide marriage for the removal of conditions on your 2 year greencard (after your AOS is approved). Most US plans only have a limited window of opportunity during which you can add a spouse so if you don't do it now, you may have to wait a full year. You don't want to be a year without health insurance in the US.
