Isn't Newark referred to as the cesspool of America?
I haven't heard that, but it would be a well deserved label.

Of course, there's so much more to NJ than Newark. From the toxic chemical factory sites of Elizabeth to the nerve gas tinged waters off Sandy Hook, to the arsenic-laced streams in the Highlands....

I have heard it called the armpit of America, the a$$hole of America, etc.
I am aware of the image.

It's all very ironic. Some of the most expensive real estate in the country, some of the highest per capita incomes in the country, all within a 10-mile radius of Newark.

I guess the help can't live too far!

I have always thought that all of it can't be that bad. Every city has it's good points too.
Not always true--some cities (most obvious example being Canada's largest, Toronto) are actually totally irredeemable.

We are in Brooklyn now, but sometimes i take Habib out to Jersey to visit my parents, and he's always like:

"Brooklyn is okay, but New Jersey is better. New Jersey is beautiful."

(i haven't told him about Jersey's national image yet.)

(He's still new around here, you know...)

Where in Jersey?

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Come on... Its not the most aesthetic place there is. And if you get the train there - you have to hold your nose in the elavator cause some bum has pi$$ed on the floor.

I used to crack up at the local authority TV ads where they extolled the virtues of the Urban Enterprize Zone - and showed carefully shot footage of a couple of the less skanky looking storefronts - like the local Gamestop.

Of course it's not aesthetically pleasing, what do you want, Westfield? :P

I mean it is not unsafe. To me, that makes it an allright place.

Newark, OTOH.. can be downright treacherous. Esp near some of the apartment complexes near the Irvington border.

Toms River... the place PD just mentioned as the most polluted place in the country. :) (i think it was you, PD, no?)

It's great, and i really don't mind being much shorter and volatile than the rest of the general population.

Its not unsafe - but you still have to navigate the pi$$ soaked bums, crazy folks and some downright loud and obnoxious people. Also there are some dodgy people hanging around the station after dark.

Think someone's child was snatched in the downtown area the other day.

I agree - Newark and Irvington are downright dangerous.

Makes one wonder when they claim that nuclear waste can be safely disposed of. Yeah, right! We are slaves to our energy requirements and we #### up our environment to satisfy our addiction.

If New Jersey allows drilling for oil and natural gas off its coast, it may dredge up an ugly and dangerous past.

drilling and dredging ... two different technologies

the writer doesn't know much about off shore platforms and exploration ...

(hint: the equipment used on the sea floor is kinda expensive ... think the companies will make sure the floor is clear before placing the equipment there?)

You're right. We all know Oil Companies never make mistakes.

exxon_valdez.jpg

And you probably never make mistakes either. Right? Therefore you should never ever be employed by any company anywhere. You are not employable because you make mistakes.

However, that being said, the offshore production sector of the US oil industry has an admirable safety record, is highly regulated by the US government, and has consistently employed the latest technology to keep pollution and loss of life to a minimum as it becomes available.

But by your standards we should stop all commerce because of any incident. Right? So we should also shut down our entire transportation system because there are accidents. No cars, no airplanes, no anything. We'll all live in tents out in the woods and all human endevours will cease because accidents surely will happen.

My advice,,,buy a horse and quit burning all that evil oil. Is this the attitude of the "Yes We Can" crowd? Boy, are we in for a real suprise after the elections.

BTW...drilling companies are required by law to do a site assessment before any drilling operations are begun. The technology is there.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

I do think they have made enormous strides in the oil industry to extract oil with a greater degree of safety than previously and I don't completely reject the notion of off shore drilling but we have to be more energy conscious in every way, and try to minimize waste. I don't think many people realize just how many industries are tied to oil - sadly.

i just find it interesting that don't know where they put it ?!!

The lack of coordinates for most of the disposal sites, and the possibility that ocean currents may have moved the weapons beyond the dump areas, makes finding the weapons difficult at best if not impracticable in some cases.
