McCain Wins Presidency In Stunning Reversal

WASHINGTON - November 4, 2008

by Adam Nagourney

After three weeks in which Democratic partisans across the country were all but bathing in premature victory champagne, Republican Sen. John McCain emerged with a 49%-48% popular vote victory and a razor-thin margin in the Electoral College that relied on base-driven victories in Florida, Ohio, Missouri and Virginia to stave off Sen. Barack Obama's seemingly unstoppable red-state invasion. The Republican will become the country's 44th president, with the power to appoint what may be as many as four Supreme Court justices by the end of his first term.

Analysts attribute the unexpected McCain triumph to an ironic source: the confidence and complacency of rank-and-file democrats in the days leading up to the election. Widespread reports indicate that many democrats chose not to make contributions, volunteer, or even vote, presuming that their standard bearer had already crossed the finish line, for all intents and purposes. Obama's massive advantage in financial and human resources all but dried up in the final weeks, allowing McCain to achieve the greatest political comeback since Harry Truman's 1948 shocker.

He's making a point - and a good one. I can't stand people that crow over victories that are not yet won. It 'aint over until the fat lady sings :)

Barring effective smears against Obama and successful voter suppression, this is all but over.

I disagree. I've had two enlightening conversations with seniors in my neighborhood about Obama and it's so much more complex than that.

I don't like that attitude either - there is nothing certain except death and taxes.

Edited to add, the attitude of Mr Jabber - re nothing can change this election barring smears.

It's not a gut 'feeling'...it's looking at the stats. Obama currently has 249 solid electoral votes (270 needed to win), with 37 leaning his way. There are many other factors, but I firmly believe that if every voter voted in this election and their votes were actually counted, Obama would win, hands down. The numbers are there.

I actually think he could very well lose New Jersey. Based on people I know who would have otherwise voted Democratic. In my neighborhood, at work, my friends, family members. I know more people who won't vote Obama than will... and that's from a sample of people who uniformly (no exceptions - none) despise Bush and think the economy is in the sh1tter and believe the war in Iraq is a huge mistake. To a person, and most won't vote Obama.

I have no doubt that the final numbers may show this race closer than it is, but there's also a chance of it being a blowout. We're both just speculating, but my speculation is based on the numbers of registered voters, Bush's low approval ratings, and the economy. Whatever hesitations some voters have with voting for Obama, it's not over policy, but on intangibles, whether it's his lack of experience, his strange name, the color of his skin. If you asked your neighbors just on the issues where they stand, I'm confident you'd find them overwhelmingly in favor of Obama's policies over McCain's.

And why do you think that means anything?

This afternoon, a neighbor of mine told me she hated Bush, the war in Iraq, blames the Republicans for the economy, but won't vote Obama because his "background is bizarre".

Lots of people won't vote on policy.
