I sent my initial K-1 package Oct 1st 2008 by registered mail. After 16 days of hearing nothing I contact the post office. I have the post office inform me that my package was in CUSTOMS!!! Instead of it being in Vermont it's being searched by customs in Illinois. They will not give me any information at all other than it's being inspected. All they would say was it was because it was from Mexico. The odd thing about it is that it was not from Mexico but it did contain some Mexican documents that were required for the visa application. It was sent from Louisiana directly to Vermont via registered mail!

Does anyone know why....... or have you had this happen to you ?

Thanks for any info

The Men in Black writers might be right that the Postoffice is run and staffed by Aliens!

I have gotten used to packages I send to South Africa from Korea ending up in Saudi Arabia (same initials - SA) , but once I send a package and when if finally ended up in South Africa after almost 6 months of travel is had more stamps than my passpart (and I have traveled a lot!!) It had visited places like Sweden and Iceland - even went to New Zeeland for a short vacation. I can remember being very jealous since these are all places I have not actually visited. Then there was the time a package I send to South Africa took almost exactly 24 hours to get to my sister's postbox from when I dropped it off at the Post Office in Korea ... which is amazing considering that that is how long it takes me to fly home!!

It is not for us poor mortals to question the working of the Postal Services.

Hope it gets sorted out soon. (and hope you have copies of everything)

It has me puzzled also. I am in Mexico at the moment and I am going to wait until I return to the states in order to question this. I also have never heard of mail going through customs if it originated here in the states and its destination is also in the states. I just hope the people at customs do not mess my package up. I spent many hours working on it and EVERYTHING was in perfect order! My fiance' was able to get some certified copies of many or her documents because they were very easy for her to obtain so I sent those in the package. They have official seals on them. If some of them dissapear  ...................... need I say more?

I finally found my answer as to why my package went to customs. The Great Wonderful EFFICIENT United States Postal Service read the VT (Vermont) as VI (Virgin Islands) and sent it to the wrong place therefore it went through customs. Yes I am mad that it took 21 extra days. All they could say was.....we're sorry???

What a load of #######. They should refund your 3$ for registered mail and give you a free role of stamps!

That sucks, I'm so sorry. I've definitely found the post office can be horribly unreliable. My package took 1 1/2 weeks from Idaho to Calfornia -- not like your ordeal, but still pretty sad when they said it'd take 3 days. I've also had multiple letters disappear between here and my SO in Germany (both directions).

I would be more concerned about your SSN and personal information being viewed since the package was probably opened and rummaged through in customs. You might want to do a security alert to the 3 credit agencies. Just a thought.

I actually had my documents stuck in Customs when my husband forwarded them to me from St Lucia. Nothing was wrong with the address... they just stayed in customs for 7 days without any explanation. He sent the documents through UPS and they would not offer a refund or any information because they are not responsible for customs delays... it's somewhere in their fine print! Glad your docs were straightened out!
