The following link, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26980587 is about a phenomenon that many times occurs when a couple has been married for a very long time; when one spouse dies the other follows shortly thereafter.

From the article:

Dying beside the love of your life and passing into eternity together is the stuff of legends, but it’s also a documented phenomenon among longtime couples.

Studies around the world have shown that the rate of mortality spikes among bereaved spouses soon after their beloved has died.

Would you want that to happen with your SO/spouse if you were to pass away first?

This has happened twice that I know of in my family.... a cousin died of cancer and her husband who was not ill died within about a month and my aunt died of lung cancer and my uncle died within a few months. I believe he was heartbroken. He wasn't the healthiest man, but I think his wife's death hastened his own death. I find it sad.

Since I don't believe in heaven (and neither does he), I wouldn't want my husband to die right after me. I'd want him to be healthy and find happiness without me.

I don't think it's a choice unless you pull the trigger. I just go with the flow, "whatever will be, will be".

I wouldn't want any children we might have to have to suffer through the loss of their mother and then their father a short time later. I'd hope the rest of my family would support each other and move on to find happiness.

Maybe not a concious choice, but I think people can bring it on by not taking care of themselves the way they did when their partner was alive and I do think unhappiness and depression affect physical health.

I'd leave it up to my hun. I have a feeling though, that if she were to go first, that I wouldn't take long to follow her.

 Why don't you take out a $10,000,000 life insurance policy on her; that way you can throw one hell of a party when she goes.
