Whew, that's good. Because a good many of man's activities are due to desire, finances, free time....I mean, sure the climate is a factor. But to BLAME the climate for all of man's activities. That's just unfair to the climate.

If she fails to understand the sublties of the policy well enough to tell a voter she meets at, say, a restaurant, and mess up and actually agree with their opponent... well you can imagine the havoc she could wreak if she were dispatched to a sensitive intl relations negotiation as VP

I've read people say that Obama 'scares' them. Palin scares me. She might be able to run a city or even a state, but she clearly isn't ready for federal government.

Thing is, the scrambling of her sentence is not what is important in the matter -- the fact that it's clear she doesn't even know what the F^#@ she's talking about is that is worrisome. Seriously, do we need someone who is divisive on scientific issues? I mean really? We don't need people to be idealists when it comes to issues like this. You don't believe in evolution, you don't believe man contributed much to global warming, so what the hell do you think happens when humans give off more CO2, methane, and other gases that help heat up the surface and ocean temperatures than they can take in (O2) return and that the planet naturally regulates? I guess God eats the global warming, because it's still cool in my freezer, oh, and in my igloo. I want to see how she takes a position on electrical engineering or carbon dating.

It's really funny because Naomi Klein interestingly enough reminded us something about the economy, and the "product" or "brand", and the wide use this mentality has that spreads beyond the economy. It used to be in the early 20th century that products sold themselves based upon quality of product. Basically proving the product was worth a #######. The marketing for a product was more like "this product speaks for itself" and word of mouth. Then, in the 80s things shifted away from quality of product, to MARKETING of the product. Then, companies all across the board spent less on customer service, less on customer relations, less on product improvement (QC), more on marketing, more on stifling choices (lawsuits, DRM, copyright). Now, today, marketing departments well outspend customer service departments. Usually marketing has American workers. Customer service has people abroad. So much for product selling on quality.

This is a microcosm of politics as well. All you have today are marketing people (Republicans and Democrats) who are basically trying to sell a candidacy to you based entirely upon the "promises" and "says", not the "do's" and "quality". Sarah Palin is the best example of this (certainly Obama has done well in marketing his philosophy and look how much people latch onto "change") because all she offers is someone who will just say a bunch of #######, like buzzwords, overly simplistic and not-thought-through phrases, and extremely careful responses because of overly zealous media and micromanaging of every word candidates say. And you wonder why she looks like an idiot? All politicians need to do today is two things:

- Market

- Sell

Market themselves like an issue people can relate to. Gay marriage? Guns? Religion? Go outside and you'll see what people are talking about.

Send out a marketing firm to take surveys and get a statistical probability of what sayings would get people to vote a certain way (this definitely works, as I've seen it personally with a town of mine, after losing a bid to raise sales tax, hire a marketing firm which basically made people believe it's for cops and firefighters, with no actual provision for those things, to change their mind and raise sales taxes anyways), market yourself based upon those sayings and voila, you have a bunch of idiots who will vote for you and latch onto your platform now.

I certainly agree about the marketing aspect of politics and its obvious in things like the conventions, which are little more than stage managed media events. This holds true with individual candidates as well, not just Palin - but someone like GWB who was somehow elected into office twice, when he seems, in many ways, totally out of his league and who has turned the office of the President into a laughing stock across much of the world. I'm still amazed that people voted for the man in '04 - despite an atrocious performance in the presidential debates. He had a lot of pre-written talking points, but he just didn't seem to be able to maintain a train of thought that showed that he understood what he was talking about. Basically unless he's prompted on what to say - he's totally ineffectual (lets not forget that Bush had to "ask the secretary" when confronted by a difficult question at a press conference).

When people say that Bush is stupid (ignorant, clueless, dumb - whatever you want to call it), they really aren't kidding...

If Palin's performance in that interview is any indication as to her level of expertise and understanding of national policy issues, then its her rather than McCain who deserves comparison with GWB.

Then again we've already heard that the format of the debates are being tailored to compensate for her weaknesses - so I suspect she'll come off a bit better than we're expecting....
