It's for native speaking arabic translators... and the pay range I gave was not a straight like I'm going to put 5000 in your bank account, it included the housing allowance as well as the pay rate... But they are hurting really bad for non contractor, army enlisted translators and they are offering the world to get you to sign your name on the x........................ line

I wanna sign :crying: (kidding) lol

It's verifiable information lol However taking into account things that come out of a recruiter's mouth may be total BS. And considering they have a contract with you but you do not have one with them.

I'm not *that * naive but that's what they'be promising these days!!!

They offer leave every 3 months (sometimes longer) for 2 weeks and they will fly you just about anywhere.. So for instance, you are serving in Iraq for a year and every few months they could fly you to Egypt or the US for a one to two week visit.

They are also offering monthly salaries in the range of $3500 USD per month up to $5000 USD per month (based on your level of education, english speaking ability and family size) That includes a housing allowance of up to $1300 USD (depending on your region) for your wife in the US while you are away.

i think the monthly wage you listed is a bit high. plus the leave bit is quite unusual - a gal i work with, her fiance just came back from there on his 3rd trip and i've heard nothing from her about anything similar to him being able to leave every few months. (this is army - if you are referring to contractors then nevermind).

Army May Pay $150K Bonus to Arabic Speakers

Posted Aug 5, 08 6:26 PM CDT in World, US

(Newser) – The Army may pay $150,000 to US soldiers who speak Arabic if they agree to stay in the service, the Christian Science Monitor reports. The Army also is ramping up its program to recruit and train Arabic speakers, both in the US and abroad. If the retention bonus is approved, it would put Arabic-speaking soldiers and translators on par with members of the Army's elite Special Forces.

The Army is looking to boost its numbers in a time of tight competition from other military services, private contractors, the FBI, and the CIA. It currently has about 600 such linguists, whose military job designation is known as the "09 Limas." To help with recruitment, the Defense Department is offering an expedited green-card process for qualified candidates.

my experience was bonuses were paid out over time. i.e. if you had a 150k bonus - which usually required an enlistment of lengthy years, let's say 6 - that's 150k/6 before taxes, or 25k lump sum per year after the first year. and we know how taxes eats up that 25k total (best to be deployed when drawing it to get the tax free benefit).

But on another note... Marines not the Army, I had another friend go through this same deal "2 year contract" he got his money up front and the monthly promised money but he spent 2 straight years in Iraq with only one 'leave' home to Tunis in the 24 months and at the end when he was done his contract they held him ( I don't know how, but he had no choice ) for an additional 6 months

get everything in writing. if it's not in writing, it don't exist.

eta: btw, the catch is - if you fail out of training, you forfeit the bonus and are assigned at the needs of that service....

Is that how they manditoraly extend things on people beyond the supposed contract?

Translator jobs are scary. We looked into it and the money is really great... and the scary factor is way too high. I would totally not be cool with it.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

part of the fine print in the contract allows them to do that, and it's legal.

Oh, OK, that's what I had always thought.. that basically they could more or less do that. Is there a limit though? I mean, you don't hear about people being pressed into service for 5 years past enlistment (not that we have had any reason to do so of course)...

I am not sure how they do that - after the contract keep people there, but they do it and it's legal.. Like I said.. they have a contract with you but you do not have one with them.

Julianna you are right.. It can be so much money... And as others have put it... I'm not afraid to die, everyone dies.. But how much money is going to buy a new arm, new leg, new eye, new hand, etc?

it is usually applied to shortage job skills, i've not heard of any going past a year, but it's possible.

But once you're discharged, that's it, right?

Not always.. said example above of the Tunisian Marine friend... He was discharged .. But they put him on something.. (Charles probably knows the technical term) where he had like another 4 years of them being able to call him any time and he just finally got 10000% completely done with it all. They did call him 2 times during this period and he wasn't like "reserve or guard" I don't know how it worked.. I will ask him.

 under a certain time frame (used to be up to 6 years), you are still able to be called back. i've been under possible recall since i retired, but i'm getting outside of their age ballpark to call back.
