Hi, just wanted to reply to the topic at hand. i happen to live about 30 minutes from the "bust", it has been a constant topic on local news, surprisingly not because these people are here illegally, but because of the children. most of the bread winners were sent to a detention center in jena, louisiana, where they will remain for up to a moth. they have left behind wives and children who now have no means to support themselves. most of the pictures shown were of women with children, searching for answers, yes it is heartbreaking. i have worked alongside them in the past, and i must say their work ethic is amazing.

should they be here, to be politically correct, no, but if i were an employer, i would definitely hire one of them as opposed to most americans who dont value to the hard work required to make a dollar.

Don't you mean Americans who don't value doing work for a dollar? That's the main reason illegals are hired is because they'll work for significantly less wages than an American will.

Maybe they'd pay taxes (the ones with ethics described above) if they had a legal way of doing it. But wait... aren't those cases specifically contributing anyway via payroll tax? :P

charles! Affirmative Action doesn't gurantee a thing for anyone because of their race. It's soupposed to create opportunities for many groups of people, that even includes gender. You're trying to force the race issue. There have been abuses and mis-interpretation of AA, but the truth is that anyone who feels that they have been discriminated or reverse discriminated can do what minorities have done in the past...take it to court. You will find that settled case law is in your favor.

In the end I think that is really what some people are so afraid about these days. Having to work a little harder than you used to, having to fight a little more for the things you want. I guess for some it's scary having someone waiting in line behind you who is willing to work harder for less money.

BTW, try switching to Google instead of Yahoo! Then maybe you won't get a bunch of stale articles from 2002. Yahoo! is great for finding movie playing times though.

you keep on thinking it has nothing to do with race. obviously you didn't read any of it, did you?

and btw that was from a google search

The point is that the programs are not designed to discriminate based on race but rather looking at the bigger picture and granting access- something that was quite easily denied to those now receiving the right to access and coincidentally creating such a fuss with people that wouldn't have a problem making a fuss about previous years of discrimination. I wonder why.

tell ya what, you go try to get help from any of those programs as a white guy and then let's see what tune you sing

Somewhat relevant (maybe not lol) but when I was unemployed in California about 4 years ago, I called to try and get any sort of help I could from the state. The lady on the phone basically told me I was SOL unless I had kids or was an illegal immigrant. Well...not basically about it. That's what she said. Really made me angry that I couldn't get any help unless I came to the country illegally or popped out a kid or two. Well...I've got a kid now, maybe I can get some free money ;D

Don't know where you're going with it but anyway- as I wrote, the gist of the programs are to offer access to those that need it based on historical and actual inaccessibility. Perhaps if you want to go on the reading a post tangent, then perhaps try going back to what I wrote and addressing the logic of whining (ironically through a user-oriented appeal to emotions) about programs that are in place to at least attempt to correct years of inequalities. Years that you fail to mention as having been bad, too.

As for my gut... well... its full of pizza and Coke Zero.

I know it must suck.

As far as I know AA programs are not for illegals. And not free money but more in line with getting access to opportunities. Hardly free money.

you're the one that said it had nothing to do with race - yet anyone who's white won't benefit from it.

:secret: here's my original post in case you forgot what this is about.

feeling like a minority yet?

Who cares? People don't get jobs based on ethnicity.

wrong. ever heard of affirmative action?

The term affirmative action describes policies aimed at a historically socio-politically non-dominant group (typically, minority men or women of all racial groups) intended to promote its access to education or employment

care to try again?

People don't get housing based on skin color. The list goes on and on, it changes absolutely nothing. :bonk:

keep trying.........yes they do.

The difference, for your benefit- is that the programs are only discriminatory to those that have an utter failure to understand two simple things: 1) history and 2) reality.

I personally believe AA programs are no longer needed in this day and age. They remind some people of those same days when there were rampant racial inequalities- some of which are obviously and painfully still very true.
