i can't disagree with the math. in fact, if they are working 10+ hours a day at $10 an hour and not paying taxes, they are really making out.

I think that math thing is overrated too. 10hrs/day at $10/hr, and they give you $300 for the week. Haha what kind of math is that? It's probably that one with imaginary numbers.

My math and the $300 in the article are not related. I was saying from husband's experience, that is what is happening at his place of work. He told me they work 10 dollars an hour and I know they work about 9 or 10 hours a day during their shifts. They aren't getting jipped a couple hundred dollars off their pay because they are illegal. They get paid what they work. Also, there are people out there making a lot less than that so is it enough to sustain a decent life? In some states yes, in others no. Again, I wasn't trying to make it out like some illegal aliens are making the big bucks.

Also, Your sarcastic remarks about how being illegal would be beneficial is actually you taking what was said the wrong way. I was not making it out to be beneficial to be illegal, otherwise why would I have gone out of my way to be a PR? All I was saying that the media seems to always advertise the poor working conditions and the cheap labour, when that is not always the case.

Lastly, I'm not a "n00b". I just rarely post on the OT forum.

Take no offense- none was intended ;)

I think t0+ was being completely ironic. Nevertheless, indeed- if your location is accurate, I'd gather that a net $10/hr in Newark or in that area would not be all that much to sustain one individual with the cost of living as it is- much less send money back 'home' as many illegals are purported to do with their wages.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Quite right. As one of the most expensive states to take up residence in the US, it wouldn't be nearly enough. Most people I know around my age that are just starting out are struggling bad. A move to PA is probably in my future, even with two decent jobs in my houshold. I don't know how illegal aliens do it, but they do.

The Pew Hispanic Center reports that the average wage for an illegal alien is about $300 a week.

FWIW in 1978, workers picking crops in the OC earned between $250-$350/ week. I worked at the local market where the workers came in and cashed their checks. Minimum wage was $2.65 at the time. On average the workers put in 60 hours/week.

10 hours isn't incredibly long.

It is if you are waiting tables or doing some strenous physical activity. Then try making it 7 days a week, and you will pretty much feel like all you do is work and sleep. Then throw in a second job, all you have to do is cut out that sleep thing (It's way overrated anyway). Hey, that sounds like my college years!

Oh yeah...if I tell my employer I'm illegal they don't have to withold taxes, Social Security, or any of that ####### right? It's not like I'll ever see a dime from that Social Security scam. Because if that works folks, I was thinking I could go shopping and tell the checkout person, "I'm an Illegal Alien." No sales tax for you señor! That would be the most useful with gas, that stuff is getting really expensive.

You guys are awesome! I never knew being illegal would be so beneficial!

10 hours is a walk in the park, try doing 16+ hours in combat.

Chill pill brother Charles... that was a joke that unfortunately has an actual foundation in some of the more gung-ho border fencing arguments out there.

But the flavor for this month is strawberry.

Commentary indeed - because there no way that would pass as a piece of researched journalism. He cites "the impacts to American citizens" in extremely generalised terms with nothing specific in reference to his claims.

I think the impact is having to look at too many brown people. Is there a way to make someone color blind?

Oh, good, it's been a while since I've seen the "If you have a problem with illegal immigration, it must be because you don't like brown people" argument. I was going into withdrawals ;)

I'm anti-illegal immigration too. It's simply easy to spot a legitimate argument against illegal immigration versus one based upon race (i.e. skin color).

Edit: Corrected a pretty funny error.

I think the majority of us are as well. Its just that many of us can't tell the difference between being anti-illegal and being in denial about having a certain set of beliefs that can best be characterized as prejudicial based on a very limited scope of how the world behaves.
