Tyson Foods plant in Tennessee scraps Labor Day holiday for all employees - replaces it with Eid ul-Fitr

Who don't they let those that wanted Eid off take it off and work labor day and those who want labor day off work on Eid?

Because then there would be 1 extra day where the plant wouldn't have it's full complement of people (thus, less capacity).

I see. I don't know, it's not that big of a deal but I am not going to be PC and say "yay" or anything. I think comparing Christmas is different. But I am sure soon people won't think that needs to be a day off since it's Christian. Maybe we should be like India and recognize so many religions' holidays that there are tons of paid days off.:P

Why is Christmas different? I think the problem with having a floating holiday that people could take off one holiday or the other is that on Eid, the plant will be more than half empty.

But I agree with the recognize more holidays bit!!! :dancing: We get much less vacation/holiday time than many parts of the world! Craziness!!!

Why is it PC to think that this is a reasonable change, especially considering a majority of the workers celebrate that holiday and furthermore, it was a negotiation that was allowed by contract?

Exactly. :D

More time for parties, or spending time with family, or sleeping alllllll damn day.

I wouldn't mind holidays like this (I'm agnostic and appreciate Christmas simply for the holiday spirit) since I get to celebrate them however I want. I simply love family, love friends, and love seeing everyone having a good time. :)

It's nice to see that some of the non-Muslim employees were willing to be flexible, seeing that the majority of the workers are Muslim and it is after all just one out of 8 holidays.

Exactly. Compromise to make EVERYONE happy. Such a novel thought for some, apparently.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I don't quite get why it's not possible to allow the minority to still choose labour day as their holiday as apposed to 1 Oct. However, I am not management :D

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Not EVERYONE was happy...no one seemed really angry at least, just annoyed.

Perhaps. But I do suppose that if the opposite scenario were in place- denying a majority its 'desire' then we'd be looking at things a bit differently.

I do think that, labor shortages aside, accomodating one date for some workers to choose vs another date, is a good idea.

The fix for some, and I am not singling anyone out on this, is that there are Muslims involved in the equation.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
