Charles, for all the shyte given to liberals in Hollywood who've never served in the military, why is it that some many Right Wingers like to prop John Wayne up as a symbol of patriotism? You couldn't have chosen a bigger poser than the Duke himself.

i don't recall him making negative comments about the usa.

When did dissent stop being patriotic?

when was dissent patriotic?

The American Revolution was all about dissent...it certainly wasn't about loyalty to government or nation (Great Britain).

strange, i always thought it was about taxation without representation.

 That's not dissent?

you can wordsmith it into anything you'd like, but that was the crux of it.

Good grief, Charlie Brown. If that's not dissent, then I don't know what you'd call it.

I'm going to call you Tenacious C from now on.

let the name calling begin..........

The Patriot did as well in the UK as Raiders of the Lost Ark did in Germany. After that and Braveheart people wondered if Mel Gibson had some sort of problem with British people.

Neil thinks Braveheart is hilarious. Something about loin cloths and blue paint on Mel Gibson's face. I didn't catch all of what he said

Braveheart turned the Scots into woad-painted picts who live in hobbit villages, and interpreted the Battle of Stirling to have taken place on a open battlefield, rather than a bridge over a river.

...any movie with John Wayne in it.

He doesn't really do it for me, either. It's hard to take a tough-guy actor seriously whose real first name is Marion ;) There's actually an unintentionally funny scene in The Greatest Story Ever Told, where John Wayne plays the Roman centurion at the Cross. Wayne played all his characters the same way, with the same famous drawl. When Jesus dies, I expect the centurion to say, "Surely this man was the Son of God...........pil-grim." :P

He's just not sexy - I like my badass heroes to be sexy, like Clint Eastwood

THANK YOU !

There was nothing sexy about John Wayne, that's for sure.

I prefer Clint, myself!

The biggest problem in that movie (there were certainly others) was the scene where the British locked a group of people (including the fiancee' of Mel Gibson's character's son) inside a church, and then burned the church. This closely resembled the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane, France in 1944 by the SS. The British were hardly the equals of the Nazis.

It does annoy me when the Scots get confused with the Picts. Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, did the same thing.

Pearl Harbor a.k.a. "The Mother Of Continuity Errors"

For example:

Mistake Continuity: When the final planes take off from the aircraft carrier to bomb Tokyo, the captain gives the order for extra speed. But when the second and third planes take off, you can see that the carrier is safely moored with three anchor chains at the front of the ship and not going anywhere.

Nope, just those of the Hebrew faith.

Yes!

It just seems so... pointless, more than anything. And pretty disrespectful - we're not talking ancient history here.

Hell - the weirdest thing about that movie was the modern frigate taking the place of a WW2 era German destroyer. And what happened to John Bon Jovi who vanishes half way through with no explanation.

He's killed when that US sub blew up. It's really quick and easy to miss. He gets hit by a piece of debris. I guess the scene was a bit longer and shows him getting decapitated but they cut it to get a PG-13 rating.
