We can't carry on with our lives in fear. Yes, there are dangerous people out there who could harm you, but beyond taking reasonable precautionary measures, there's not much more you can do...except maybe live in cave.

A horrible tragedy.

Agreed - there's no reason to suppose that suddenly people need to take all these extra precautions. There's no way on hell that you could predict something like this - but clearly in terms of reactionary attitudes there are similarities with terrorism in that if people get scared enough they will change their behaviors and become increasingly paranoid.

It's sensational and does a number to our psyche...I totally understand that. What seems to have been lost since 9/11 is the wisdom to recognize exaggerated psychological fear for what it is.

Absolutely. And of course the Govt's has done us no favors in making fear of terrorism the sole reason for keeping them in power - and their role in playing up such fears via arbitrary (and quite silly) color-coded alert systems.

My daughter used to do Greyhound from Portland south to Corvallis to go to Oregon State University. (Go Beav's) she said there were always some strange birds there.. .. but usually just that.. nothing more.. ..

Then.. I have been trying to plan this surprise trip to California for Christmas... dont want to drive if price of gas is as it is now.. so was thinking.. hmmmm.. greyhound.. maybe...

A client of mine who is a Sheriff.. works in the Probation extradition portion of the field... any how... she knew I was thinking of doing BUS/Greyhound.. and she decided it would be good for her to tell me...... ohhh guess what... .. since .. there are BUDGET cuts everywhere... they are NO LONGER... extraditing prisoners via plane.. they are NOW doing all travel VIA GREYHOUND.... some are escorted.. and some are not...

Ever since she said that.. I have this thought.. hmmmm.. Greyhound... HMMMM.. busmate criminal... .. Might I say.. NO GREYHOUND for meeeeee..

Even city buses in LA can be dodgy - as can the metro system towards downtown LA.

I've personally not had any problems on the buses in NJ - but a girl at work told me she'd been assaulted once by some crazy and had to get out the mace.

One more reason why I'm not a fan of public transportation. Think about it - PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. Give me my Jeep anyday over taking a bus.

Not in my case. While I was in Barranquilla a few weeks ago, I helped corner a thief in the restaurant I was eating at. If I was paranoid, I wouldn't have even gone to Colombia in the first place. I'd be too afraid to leave the USA. Too afraid to leave my house! I'd be hunkered down, watching Fox News or something...

As for public transportation, ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

Dare I mentione the big furore over child s*x offenders at this point. Listening to people talk about this - you would be forgiven for imagining that there are stunty little Nosferatu men lying in wait to snatch children as soon as they step off the garden path.
