Just for fun. :)

How do the residents of the US usually react when they hear your accent or hear you're from the UK?

Whenever I speak, the person nearby usually stops and looks at me for a moment, and then listens in. Occasionally I've had them ask where I'm from (or they assume I'm from London because everyone with a Southern English accent must be!)... the best is when they wait until I've stopped speaking and then comment on what a cool accent I have.

Usually if i have to ask for something (i.e. I once had to try and get passport photographs) then I find the person asks me to repeat .... the other day I was in Safeway, the cashier was asking about something I responded he asked me to repeat then admitted he had heard the first time but he wanted to hear the accent.

OH suggests this only happens in small towns, larger cities are probably more familier with hearing a huge range of accents and dont bat an eyelid.

When people ask Mags where she's from, she sometimes says "Kentucky".

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I have also been asked if I live near the queen! lol.

I went into the hairdressers in Baltimore with Stevens mum and I asked the hairdresser to cut my fringe and shes like "what?" and I'm attempting to point my fringe out and she is saying "thats your bangs" so I just nodded and moved on :D .

Laura your Lucky!, I cant go back over until after my approval, which will hopefully be soon!.

I live in Chicago. So most people are used to the different accents. I do get the odd person comment. Most people seem to think I'm from Ireland :bonk:

Best one I ever had was a few years ago here in Chicago, before I met my wife. Was in a cafe, placing my order. The guy behind the counter said to me "sorry I don't speak German"!!!

Okay I know I'm Australian but I'm currently in the UK. In the US they always look a little confused. Last time someone said to me you sound like a Hillbilly but you don't look like one. !!!!

Now that we're in California, when people ask where he's from he always says, "Connecticut." When we were in CT, he always said, "New Haven."

There is girl at the local grocery store who makes a huge fuss every time I go in there....bombarding me with questions and getting me to say the name of the items i'm buying....like "cup a soup" No one i've met has ever heard of name before either.....most get it wrong...calling me Jenna.....how hard can Jemma be? lol

I live in the deep South, so when Anna speaks she gets their attention. Usually her purple hair makes them take notice first though (as there are not too many ladies with purple hair in South Carolina) & when she starts talking they are amazed. I get a kick out of watching peoples' reactions when we are out shopping. She does get a lot of compliments like "I luuv your accent" & one guy even flagged down his wife & then asked Anna to "say something" so that she could hear her accent.

People have guessed that she was from Scotland and Ireland, & one person thought she was from New England  (???) Some people just say "You ain't from around here are you?"

Hahaha - ok well people in Palm Springs, CA don't seem to care too much - I think a lot of Ex-pats might live here but I haven't found any yet!! The only "I love your accent" came from a gay guy in WaMu.

Of course, I have been remembered in our local grocery store now (where I no longer have to provide ID to buy alcohol - just give them my DOB because they remember me :D ) which is kinda handy.

As for really dumb@$$ comments...

Jeremy's aunt asked if I knew Princess Diana. I said "No, she's dead." His aunt then proceeded to explain that she wanted to know if I knew her before she died

I also (recently) got asked by my brother-in-law's friend what language I spoke in England  I said "English" while trying not to actually pass out from her sheer stupidity, to which she replied "No, I mean your native tongue" like I was stupid and didn't understand her first question...

I mean come on - what language did she think we spoke in ENGLAND?!?!
