Should all renters, including the US born, be required to obtain occupancy license in order to rent?

A proposed law aimed at banishing illegal immigrants from Fremont, Neb., would require every renter — whether they were born in the United States or immigrated here — to obtain an occupancy license through the city.

...

Nebraska Appleseed attorney Norm Pflanz said he is confident many Fremont citizens will join in opposition once they understand the full impact of the ordinance — on their lives as well as those of immigrants.

...

The proposal that went to the council for a public hearing this week calls for all renters to fill out an application verifying their legal right to be in the United States. The applications would be submitted to local police for verification, and an occupancy license would be issued.

Every person occupying a rented home or apartment would have to hold an occupancy license at a cost of $5 each. A new license would be needed every time a resident relocated to a different rental unit.

...

The Nebraska Mexican-American Commission issued a statement on Thursday saying it was disappointed with "racial and anti-immigrant remarks" made at the Fremont council meeting.

...

Pflanz, the Appleseed attorney, said some people in the audience of Latino and Asian descent overheard remarks aimed at them: "There's an illegal. There's an illegal."

"The atmosphere was very hostile to anyone who wanted to oppose the ordinance," Pflanz said.

Smart idea.. I am sure the ACLU will find something to dispute it and effectively reward criminal behavior

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Is it fair to ask USC renters to pay $5 for a license each time they move, to address a problem created by a coalition of big business and big government which was all too willing to "look the other way"?

I think renters should have to pay the school tax like us homeowners.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Are you still up for it if the state pays for anyone who cannot afford it?

I know lots of college kids who rent off campus who move at least once a year, sometimes more, if it doesn't "work out". I live in a college town so I see that a lot.

But more importantly, as a matter of principle - shouldn't the cost for the licenses be borne by those who created the problem?

If the state pays for everyone, I'd be up for it. The money can be raised through local businesses.

Yes, and don't forget the Office of the President.

Businesses did not create the problem. The responsibility to secure a nation's borders and look out for its citizens falls solely on the Federal government's shoulders.
