somebody should have introduced the concept of "grounding your child" to this couple..

poor kid.. i can only imagine what he was thinking/feeling during his "punishment"

Actually, this couple should be chained to a flagpole during a thunderstorm (since you opened the subject of "grounding"....)

Perhaps they should be judged in a court of law and sent to prison. Though NC has the death penalty I believe - so I suppose that will make some people happy.

Not really - as I've said numerous times before in threads of this nature - however heinous or horrible a crime may be (and this is) - nothing is really served by buying into sadism.

I'm leaning towards the belief they were negligent but didn't intend to kill the kid... so I would agree.

Agreed. But 'negligence' doesn't even cover the astounding stupidity of what they did...

NC does have the death penalty but I think it's been put "on hold" for now while state congress reviews it.

Besides, the death penalty is too quick and easy for the adults who did it. What's that old Chinese saying? "Do unto others what you would want others to do unto you". So, perhaps they should be tied to a tree for a period of time proportionate to their age (vis-a-vis that of the child). :rant:

I know I'll be unpopular for this opinion, but as a society, how are we better than a criminal when we suggest doing the same thing to a criminal that they did to their victim? To me, that's going backwards in a society's evolution.

I agree with you. Bear in mind, the adults believed the child had committed some misdemeanor that warrented an extreme punishment themselves these calls for 'like for like' punishments seem to exhibit not one iota of learning from this extremely sad story.

I think it hails back to an older, simpler time when people used to set fire to perfectly good women because they weighed less than a duck, and therefore had magical powers.

I think pitchforks and torches were involved somehow
