I'm with you on the endless list of negative possibities Kritkit. The 'happy' ending scenario isn't the most obvious conclusion at all - it was a bar brawl, these guys were probably all at least a little drunk and angry. Bringing guns into that mix on top of the knife doesn't seem a very happy recipe to me.

drinking ... and knives/ guns/ cars/ trucks / unprotected sex/ etc is never a good idea.

just out of curosity, how many have looked for stories where a firearm was used by a homeowner (or even a cch holder) to thwart a crime? probably none - uses of a firearm to commit a crime is what makes the news.

just a brief search got this......

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Luckily, people in the UK don't have guns. With no guns, there can be no violence or killing, correct?

Harry Potter Actor Fatally Stabbed in Bar Brawl

Who made that particulary claim? Violence isn't new in any society but would the presence of guns increase or decrease the death rate in these type of instances?

The accused is being held for murder so there was intent. We cannot account for the deranged or the plain evil sickos, so a gun may well have saved the victims life, if he had had one of course. This may have resulted in the death of the murderer, but surely thats one more danger off our streets and might send a message to other crims.

Or hastened it. Or ended an innocent bystander's life. Or ended many innocent bystander's lives. Or been stolen and used in a crime and ended some other unfortunate victim's life. Or or or.

the point here is that murder is an intent to kill. Whether its a knife, gun, bottle, or any instrument that can be used as a deadly weapon, the murderer could well have fatally stabbed another 10 people that night if he hadn't been caught by the police. There are thousands of possibilities in a situation where someone wants to commit murder, BUT a gun would certainly have taken the sicko out before he could lunge with a knife or even get close to the victim.

A couple weeks ago there was a home invasion just 10 miles from my house, out in the country. Some Meth-heads broke in to rob him. I live in Cokato which is a town of about 2000. So crime doesn't just happen in big cities.

the truth hurts

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
March 16, 2006
